Somewhere on the Libyan equivalent of foot.ie there's a moment of revelation where the posters realise, with perfect hindsight, that it's only now they know that a tyrannical, despotic regime should never have been allowed ... to send one of its teams to Libya.

That was a documentary from the wild side.
It was deemed heroic for a bunch of FF TDs to go on a junket, put on the green jersey and negotiate the sale of Fianna Fail cattle to Libya but controversial for a LOI team to go there for a game of football.

Really enjoyed it, very well put together documentary- nice to see a few old characters popping up.
Well made production of one of our foremost " Greatest League in the Wotld" events. Well done to those involved in making it

It was a very good production. A totally mad story, but what else would you expect from the LOI!?

It was superb work from that filmmaker. It was thanks to Pat Fenlon that the documentary went ahead as the VHS tape of the match was in his attic! all of the plyrs that played got a copy.

I suppose we are fortunate that it wasn't a betamax tape.

Why was the joint manager Billy Young barely mentioned and effectively airbrushed from the documentary - surely it’s not as if Iman I mean Brien Kerr has an ego and loves the sound of his own voice as he he speaks in his ‘unique’ cliche ridden monotone

very good point Calcio as Billy Young was mentioned in the advert for it so assumed he was going to appear in it!

Just watched it.Enjoyable, less Kerr more Joe Lawless and the lads would have improved it.

Did you notice that on the 2 or 3 occcasions when the rte news interviewed Haughey at Dublin Airport, Albert Reynolds made a beeline to be at Haughey's shoulder, in camera of course. Talk about cheap strokes in low places.

Interesting documentary. I also managed to get through my entire Dundalk supporting life without ever hearing about this.

Couple of other interesting ones:

August 1979, a League of Ireland second string played the Basque National XI in Bilbao (the "first" LOI XI was busy playing Liverpool in Dublin).
April 1986, the League played Iraq in Baghdad in a match to mark Saddam's birthday.

Dundalk being the Mujahideen completes the middle-east warlords trifecta. :D
