:( An international soccer star is this evening fighting for his life after a freak accident when a roof collapsed under him on Friday night.
The family of 23 year old Shane Brennan from Newtownforbes, in County Longford, have kept a bedside vigil over the weekend at the Midlands Regional Hospital in Mullingar.

Mr Brennan played with the Irish Technical and Private Colleges soccer team for the past three years, and saw international duty in Cyprus and Spain, and was aiming for a place in the combined Irish Colleges team which competes in the World Student Games in Turkey this summer.

He is a student at Dublin Institute of Technology and is currently on the books of Athlone Town FC.

RTE did have it Hamish. They just had it in the news part, not in the sport.

Tragic loss of life especially for someone who had so much to look forward to.
Condolences to his entire family his friends in Newtownforbes, his Athlone Town team-mates, his DIT team-mates and his Irish International Combined Universities and Colleges squad mates. However the Irish squad does at the World Student Games will no longer matter.
Rest In Peace.

I hope it was acknowledged by a minutes silence at Turners Cross last night and is recognised at every game this weekend. And that hopefully the Eircom League or PFAI will see to organising a benefit game for his family.

the removal was packed . a lot of our ex-panel from 4 years ago along with Stephen Kenny attended. The Athlone squad and management and from Monaghan also made it there. Not many of our current squad were there? assume themselves and Matthews will attend tommorrow? strange that really

I'm sure they'll make their sympathies known at some stage. Great to see that so many turned out. God help his poor family too.
