Final match of the season for the joint club, Wexford FC/Wexford Youths Women, as WYW played a very decent final league tie against Cork City Women on the all-weather pitch in Mayfield. As expected, Tom Elmes made a large number of changes (six in all) from the team that started in the cup final with Jean Kavanagh-Doyle making her debut in goal, a back four of Lynn Craven, Lauren Dwyer, Lolly Conlon and Becky Cassin, a midfield four of McKenna Davidson, Aoife Slattery, Kylie Murphy and Fiona Ryan and with Lauren Kelly and Blessing Kingsley up front. Disappointed not to see Vanessa Ogbonna involved in the Wexford squad as she looks to have so much potential. It was Cork who started the best as Kavanagh-Doyle, who had a fine debut in the Wexford goal, did well to block a Cork shot as the defensive clearance by Wexford wasn’t the best. Cork then followed with three successive corners and Cork’s Maggie Duncliffe had a good shot parried by Kavanagh-Doyle. However, Wexford went ahead with more or less their first decent attack when McKenna Davidson crossed to the near post where Blessing Kinglsey nipped in to volley past O’Sullivan in the Cork goal for 1-0 to Wexford. Kavanagh-Doyle then did well to push out a lofted Cork shot before the impressive Saoirse Noonan for Cork curled one into the top corner of the far post to give Kavanagh-Doyle no chance and it was 1-1. Kavanagh-Doyle then did well again to push away with her foot a goal-bound Cork effort for a corner. Kylie Murphy then came close to getting a header on target for Wexford but suffered badly from a clash of heads with serious bruising apparent on one side of her face. Kylie came off immediately and was replaced by Aisling Frawley of Wexford and hopefully Kylie’s injury is only bruising. Two late chances fell to Wexford’s Lauren Kelly before half-time and it was a fair enough 1-1 draw between both sides at half-time.
