Premier Division club Shamrock Rovers and Sligo Rovers of the First Division have both been handed fines by the eircom League’s disciplinary committee at its meeting this week arising out of recent indiscretions.

Shams, whose precarious financial position has necessitated the appointment of an examiner in recent weeks, were fined €200 and severely warned as to the future conduct of their supporters as a result of flares being ignited and objects being thrown onto the field of play in the match against Cork City on April 29th last.

The ill-tempered game ended on a sour note when one player from each side, Rovers’ Cathal O’Connor and Cork’s Danny Murphy, were dismissed after an injury-time skirmish – an incident that was dealt with elsewhere in the disciplinary committee’s meeting.

Sligo, on the other hand, were fined €100 for the improper conduct of their players during the First Division clash with Athlone Town, also on April 29th.

In addition to the sending-off of midfielder Conor O’Grady, four other Rovers players were booked in the game, a situation that was outlined in the report of match referee Neil Doyle.

when the rule about flares came in, wasn't it stated that it was a €500 fine every time they were used in a ground. Yet objects being thrown by fans + flares = €200
