View Full Version : Hostage Situation in Cork
From RTE News
Gardaí in Cork have foiled an extortion attempt after a family was held hostage by an armed gang.
Two men have been arrested. Gardaí are still searching for at least one more.
At around 8.30pm last night two masked men burst into the home of Gary and Katie O'Donovan at Mount Oval Village in Rochestown, Co Cork, and held a woman at gunpoint.
They were looking for the woman's husband, a businessman, but he was not at home at the time.
When he arrived home at around 10pm he was beaten, tied up and had a cloak placed over his head.
The man was held downstairs by one of his attackers while another held the man's wife, who is six months pregnant, upstairs.
The couple's four children slept through the ordeal.
The men are believed to have demanded money from the businessman and are believed to have been waiting until 7am this morning to bring him to a warehouse where they thought cash might be held.
However, the man escaped during the night and raised the alarm. Gardaí from throughout the city arrived at the scene and arrested two men as they tried to escape

Of the two men arrested, one has a Northern accent and the other has an address in Louth.
Even the least mobile among us will be able to jump to conclusions on this.

just heard about this on the radio.
one of the guys holding him hostage fell asleep!!!
this really is getting out of hand
Well its not as if those northern accented guys haven't experience of kidnapping & extortion.
Why did the guy escape leaving his pregnant wife in the custody of thugs???

I guess he had a choice to make and it was clearly the right one.
Don't know how I'd react in such a situation.

Not on BBC news NI-know it's in the Republic but might have thought they'd put summit in if it was the provos.....early day's yet....though some have obviously forgotten their roots-attacking a family in the rebel county; why they they just go and pee on Mick Collins grave! Some argue the IRA has been a disgrace for years now but holding a Cork man hostage to get his money blatantly makes a mockery of everything it was formed in the name of
Having said that will be interesting to see how Adams reacts and how this affects the SF election camapign....no doubt these guys are rouges-...not saying the IRA are "to nice" to sancation something like this-they just wouldn't be that stupid!
Guess we can just sit back and watch the conspiracy theories roll in of British discrediting of the IRA....I won't believe them; if they were hired by the British they would have probably shot him like they did in Dublin......

why [don't] they just go and pee on Mick Collins grave!
they'd have a $hit on it too if they thought that they could get a bit of cash from it

Such is their support that its likely to gain votes for SF in upcoming elections. I sometimes wonder what SF voters think is actually a crime as robbery doesn't seem to be.
Why did the guy escape leaving his pregnant wife in the custody of thugs???
His wife's brother is the local Garda sergeant and lives nearby. He alerted him to the situation and he activated the Garda response.
I suppose it was a risk he felt hr had to take. One of the thugs fell asleep and he seized the oppurtunity to raise the alarm.
