As the scoreline suggests, an interesting game due to the contrast in playing styles rather than of much quality in Ferrycarrig this evening as both sides found it hard to create chances. Having signed so many new players, Wexford had a much changed look and started with Jason, Conor Sutton, Darragh O’Connor, Darragh Walsh, Andrew, Emmet, Paddy, Shane Griffin, Ricky and with Crokey playing behind Danny up front. Perhaps due to the changes, Wexford were a bit passive in the first half and allowed Galway have too much possession. However,Galway’s direct style and long throws were contested admirably by the strong Wexford centre-backs with the result that few chances were created in the first half. On seven minutes, an unchallenged Galway header from a corner went wide at the near post. With 14 minutes gone, a Danny Furlong break saw him turn and hold up rather than get a shot on goal. Paddy Cahill then shot well over the Galway crossbar before, on 35 minutes, Higgins of Galway should have scored when he could only scoop the bouncing ball over the Wexford crossbar with only Wexford keeper, Jason McGuire, to beat from six yards out. Paddy Cahill, perhaps the best midfielder on show, then beat two defenders in the Galway area before planting a shot straight into the midriff of Horgan in the Galway goal. With injury time almost arriving, another of Wexford’s new arrivals, Shane Griffin, showed his ability with the dead-ball when he forced Horgan to push his first effort around the Galway post for a corner and, a minute later from the identical spot, force Horgan to scramble behind his wall as he curled another free just wide of the other Galway post. 0-0 at half-time.
