Sligo Rovers manager Sean Connor has admitted that his winter recruit Carlos Alvarez must adapt quickly to the physical nature of the eircom League after the Bolivian’s disappointing performance in last weekend’s first defeat of the season for the Bit O’Red.
Alvarez endeared himself to the Sligo supporters with a match-winning double against Connacht rivals Galway United three weeks ago.
However, the pair at Terryland Park remains his only goals in a Sligo shirt and he was unable to make any impact against a physical Monaghan side on Saturday night.
Manager Connor said: “I think physically Carlos struggled all night. I don’t think he held the ball up. I think the two centre backs bounced him around all night, but I’ve said this all along, he has to get used to the game.
“Carlos has got to start imposing himself and if he doesn’t want to stand up and have a physical battle he’s got to move and spin off the ball.”

Said about Alvarez after I saw him at Terryland against Galway he will break your heart. That night he was our worst player and our best (excluding Conor)going by his finishes. However although it proved taht night he can finish he nneds to add more to his game to adopt to the firts divsion, he aint samll but wins no headers if we can work on this maybe he will pay dividends.lets just see how he firs when McT is back

Nearly forgot about Darren Jack, ya Alverez has done nothing to suggest his inclusion in the team. The sooner Paul McT and Steven o'donnaill get fit the better, stick them two up front. Pauls speed and stephen strength would be a a match for any defence. Remember a forward of ours hasnt scored in 270 minutes of football!!!!

Carlos Alvarez, yeah quite a frustrating player and one a lot of fans have been disappointed with. But I will still give him the benefit of the doubt for now.Going by his performances at the showgrounds he has disappointed and mybe we always expect more from strikers than other players, however coming from the States where the game would not be as physical he will need time to adopt. Also remember all the young lads like Sean kelly,Gary Curran,Sean Purcell, Jason McCarthney etc.. who we give the benefit of the doubt to because of their age well Carlos is ony a year or 2 older than these guys which we seem to forget.... Going by games such as Galway and Longford and he played in patches against Shams and Dundalk I'l give him time and who knows whata goal at the showgrounds can do for him...

i know but those players you mentioned havent been brought into the club on a large wages as our principal attacking threat. He has played enough games to settle, he needs to start scoring goals soon. It will be prob better if he is on the bench for the next few games and use him as what the americans say a "impact player". But what have we seen so far of him. He has no speed, no strength, his touch against Monaghan was Sligo/Leitrim 2nd Division at best, no positional sense and we have yet to see his finishing abilities(apart from galyway where apart from the goals he was terrible). I look forward to be proven wrong by this guy, i really do.

are they in the major league or what standard of football was he playing?
are they in the major league or what standard of football was he playing?
I've been wondering myself, basically I researched it kind of, the team play in the 'EASTERN INDOOR SOCCER LEAGUE'.So, he played indoor football in America.
All the links to the league association and the team are dead links, so i cant see the team being of any noticeable standard.I could be wrong though.

i say give carlos a chance . i didnt realise he was so young and it cant be easy for him to adjust to a style of football in this division that would probably be totally alien to him.

I remember reading in the weekender about alvarez. That he was an old fashion striker. That like to get stuck in and stand on fellas toe,s and throw elbow,s at defenders. And the ball would stick to him and he was quick.Ya he,s quick. But it would be great if he was as quick to look a cross the line before he starts running.
