Wexford will regard themselves as very unfortunate not to get something from the game in Ferrycarrig tonight as they conceded two late goals to Longford in really difficult conditions. With a strong gale, unceasing driving rain and a very slippy pitch, there was a touch of a lottery about the entire game. Wexford started with Corey, Darragh, Owen, Crokey, Lee, Danny Doyle, Ryan, Paddy, Emmet and with Jack Doherty playing behind Danny Furlong up front. From the start, it was a contrast of playing styles with Longford being very patient and Wexford more direct. First half was virtually even in terms of chances. On eight minutes, first decent chance fell to Wexford when Danny Furlong had a shot which Steacy in the Longford goal could only knock back to him, but it rose just a bit too high for Danny to volley cleanly home. A good Longford move then saw Elworthy have a chip which just went the high side of the Wexford crossbar. Immediately, former Wexford player Dobbs limped off for Longford and was replaced. Corey Chambers then had a decent catch from a Longford free which curled round the Wexford wall. On 18 minutes, Wexford went ahead when Danny Furlong got a through ball which he’d normally convert in his sleep and he didn’t disappoint on this occasion. 1-0 to Wexford. Longford then had two headed chances, the second of which hit Corey Chambers on his goal-line when either side would have sufficed. Corey was able to grab on the second attempt. Wexford finished well when Emmet Nugent had a cross which went just past the far post and Danny Furlong showed less composure with an effort on his left peg. 1-0 to Wexford at half-time.

Wexford tried to take the steam out of the game from half-time onwards and invited Longford to come at them. On seven minutes, Wexford had a goal disallowed for offside as a far-post header was converted from a free. On the hour mark, Longford hit the post with a header but it stayed out and Paddy Cahill had a drive over the Longford bar from 30 yards out. Just as Wexford looked like getting to the final whistle, Longford equalized when Verdon found himself free inside the Wexford penalty area, and he couldn’t miss from eight yards. 1-1 at this stage. However, the momentum was with Longford from then until the end and, with five minutes to go, a shot from Hopkins looped with the aid of a deflection over Chambers in the Wexford goal to put Longford ahead. Wexford pushed hard to get an equalizer in the few minutes that remained but couldn’t manage one. Best for Wexford on a night when the efforts of the home-team were appreciated by the Wexford fans were Jack Doherty, Owen McCormack, Darragh O’Connor and Emmet Nugent. Maybe, 200 at the game in really tough conditions.

Looks like it, Marty, but to be honest I'm never certain whether we'll turn out in the pink ones or the black ones.
