Tough night for Wexford as they got demolished by a rampant Galway in a wet Ferrycarrig and the score could have been worse but for a number of acrobatic saves by Joe Walshe in the Wexford goal. Wexford started with Walshe, Croke, Callan, McCormack, Costello, Arevadze, Kelly, Cahill, Lawal and with Nugent and Doherty up front. In hindsight, the warning signs were there right from the start as Galway forced Walshe to make two good saves in the first couple of minutes. Galway were operating at a different pace to Wexford and they were able to run at the Wexford defence more or less at will throughout the game. All four goals conceded by Wexford looked a bit soft but Galway also missed a number of other chances. First goal came on 24 minutes when Wexford didn’t clear properly and Higgins finished nicely coming in from the left for 1-0. Another error in the Wexford defence on the half-hour allowed Higgins finish again and it was nearly three for Galway just before the end of the half but for a good defensive block. Despite the tireless work by Emmet Nugent and Jack Doherty for Wexford, the home side didn’t create anything but for a snapshot a yard wide by Paddy Cahill. Galway went in two nil up at half-time and it could have been more.
