REPORT: Keeper scores, but Athlone lose

Athlone Town goalkeeper Gary Connaughton scored from a goal kick at windy St Mel's Park on Friday evening, but his outfield team-mates failed to take his lead and Dublin City came back to snatch the three points.

Athlone Town 1-2 Dublin City

(A: Connaughton 17) (D: Markey 43, 76)

Dublin City recorded a 2-1 win over Athlone Town on Friday evening, but the incident that will have football fans talking for many years to come was Athlone goalkeeper Gary Connaughton's 17th minute goal. Connaughton's goal kick sailed over the head of his Vikings counterpart and into the net, thanks to a little help from the gale force winds that blew throughout the game. However, a Brendan Markey brace (43 and 76) moves Dublin City five points ahead of Drogheda United at the top of Division One.

EIRCOM LEAGUE PREMIER DIVSION

Bohemians 3-0 Monaghan United

(B: Byrne pen 34, Folan 68, Scully og 88) (M: White s/off 34)

Bohemians eased to a 3-0 win over Monaghan United at a cold and blustery Dalymount Park, thanks to strikes from Paul Byrne and Tony Folan. Byrne scored from the spot after Ashley White was sent off for a professional foul in the 34th minute. The Gypsies sewed up the game on 68 minutes, when Folan pounced for his first league goal of the season. Mick Scully added to Monaghan's woes when he scored in his own net with two minutes left to play. Bohs, who are now five matches unbeaten, are still in contention for a European place, having moved up one place to fifth. Monaghan, who were relegated last weekend, are still looking for their third league win of the season.

St Patrick's Athletic 2-1 Bray Wanderers

(S: Russell pen 68, McCarthy 75) (B: O'Connor 18)

Bray Wanderers looked to be heading for an unlikely win away to St Patrick's Athletic, before Martin Russell and Ger McCarthy rescued the points for the hosts. Barry O'Connor opened the scoring for Wanderers after 18 minutes, and the score remained at 1-0 until Russell slotted home a penalty on 68 minutes. Ger McCarthy completed the comeback for Pat Dolan's men on 75 minutes. The win moves Pat's above Shamrock Rovers into second place, while Bray continue to hover dangerously above the promotion-relegation play-off spot.

Derry City 3-0 Shamrock Rovers (Thursday)

(Coyle pen 40, Doherty 46, McGlynn 69)

Shamrock Rovers were denied top spot in the eircom League Premier Division by a rampant Derry City, who emerged 3-0 winners from this Brandywell clash. Liam Coyle opened the scoring from the penalty spot on 40 minutes, after Pat Scully handled a Gareth McGlynn shot. One minute after the restart, Derry were 2-0 ahead, thanks to an Eamon Doherty header. The result was put beyond doubt when McGlynn scored the third on 69 minutes. Rovers remain two points behind leaders Shelbourne, who have a game in hand.
