Russia score in injury time to beat Romania 1-0.

We'll need our draw.

First team to qualify, and with a game to spare!

Wow, that's fantastic! This team looks like it could really make an impact in the finals, with or without the six other star strikers who could have played. And to think, a few of us (myself included) were worried that the U19s were being sacrificed so that Stephen Kenny could have his pick for the U21 game against Luxembourg... how little we knew. Well done to all involved.

Well f'k me, when was the last time Ireland won 5-0?

I've no idea how good the Romania u19 team are but the first team is ranked 25th, above us obviously, it is not like say they are Gibraltar, would not be surprised if we struggle to put more than a couple past them!
Indeed we failed to out a couple past them!

Just looking at how the rest of the elite round groups are ahead of the final set of fixtures tomorrow: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_UEFA_European_Under-19_Championship_qualification#Groups_2

Group 2
Greece top the group ahead of England, who they beat on Saturday. Any one of the top three (Greece, England, Czech Republic) can qualify. England possibly have the easier fixture against an already eliminated Denmark, while hoping that Greece and the Czechs can cancel each other out.

Group 3
Norway top the group after beating Germany on Saturday. With eliminated Hungary facing Germany, Norway face hosts Croatia on the final day

Group 4
All comes down to the final fixture between the Netherlands (who Ireland beat in the Qualifying round) and Spain. Netherlands have the advantage of being hosts.

Group 5
Hosts France face table toppers Israel to determine who goes through. Israel haven't conceded in the group so far, they conceded in every game in the qualifying stage, and only need a draw to qualify

Group 6
The only group with two teams with two wins. Scotland face hosts Portugal, with Scotland only topping the table on goals scored.

Group 7
The only group where every team can still qualify, although it would be a surprise if either Ukraine or Serbia did qualify. Hosts, and top scorers, Italy face lowest scorers Serbia, while Belgium, who have the best defence, will play Ukraine

McGuinness scores a good header from a freekick to go 1-0 up just on the brink of halftime. Tom Gaston has been good defensively at right back. Bolger is Ireland's best player by a long way so far today. They've lost a little cohesion by making so many changes which is understandable. I really rate Festy Ebosele but he hasn't got into the game at all so far.

Mark McGuinness with the goal. Anyone know his connection to Ireland?

2-0! Strong run and absolute cracker of a finish from Ali Reghba - holding off three Russians en route. Lethal.

England and Germany both fail to qualify. Ourselves, Armenia, Czech Republic, Italy, Norway, France, Portugal 2-0 up over Scotland so looks like them and one of Holland/Spain are the 8 who have qualified.

Whisper it, but they've a chance. A serious chance. England going out is huge.

Wow, nine changes and we still beat Russia 2-0! In Russia! That's awesome. So... six competitive games over the weekend... six competitive victories.. not too shabby at all

Russia didn't score a single goal at home in the entire group. Madness. Crazy to think a few years ago we went from having a great group with Hendrick, Doherty and Brady to really struggling. Hopefully this is a sign we have a couple of good groups coming through.

Sure isn't this winning thing easy. At all levels now we are beating Eastern European teams easily!

Hard to know. Suspect the 21s will want as many as possible tbh, especially given they're going to Toulon.

U-19 Finals in Armenia is on
14/7 - 27/7
https://www.uefa.com/under19/season=2019/finals/index.html?iv=true

No major reasons the likes of Idah, Parrot etc can't play in both.

Tom Mohan has a great problem in selecting that squad. He'll have to omit a few who contributed to qualification.

Exciting times.

The only problem some of them might face, particularly Idah and Connell, is that they are likely to be involved in pre-season with the first teams at that stage.

That Mathew shields used us to get his Scottish call up and has played I think for them this season so ineligible I'd say embarrassing behaviour from him.

That Ryan corrigon is the unicorn of underage football never been involved for us

Cassidy ,Tommy caffrey at Celtic and kayode at rotherham are striker options

As a bolter hunt at Sheffield wed was in the recent 19s friendly squad and seems to be on the verge of breakthrough at his club

Given the timing of the tournament interfering with pre season alot of lads might be unavailable. Last summer England took a squad that was mostly second or third choice players

Olé Olé

Think this would be my squad assuming Obafemi isn’t allowed by Southampton which considering injury is pretty likely...

1. Maher^
2. Clarke
3. O’Connor^
4. Lyons^
5. Doherty*
6. Collins^
7. Gaston^
8. McEntee
9. Bolger
10. Coventry
11. Knight
12. Connell
13. Parrott
14. Idah
15. Ferry
16. Afolabi
17. Reghba
18. Smallbone
19. Kavanagh
20. Connolly

2000-01 is by far the most talented age group in decades. Probably another 20 lads who deserve consideration.

Does Leicester's Shane Flynn make the U19 or any of our underage squads? The Guardian (http://https://www.irishmirror.ie/sport/soccer/soccer-news/republic-ireland-youngster-shane-flynn-13395257)tipped him as Leicester's "most likely to make it" academy player last year. He turns 18 in October.

Coventry played in the Toulon tournament, so it was always a long shot that he would be included in the squad.
I'm a little surprised that clubs can refuse to release players for the tournament though, is it the same for qualifiers?

Eirambler

I think there will be a few more dropouts because of the timing unfortunately.

Two annoying things about this - firstly, why isn't the tournament on in June during the international window - the Euro under 17s and 21s are on then as well as the under 20 World Cup, why not the 19s?

Secondly, players like Conor Coventry will play a full part in West Hams pre-season, play a few warm up games and then get nowhere near the team once the season starts properly. Same for Adam Idah if he gets pulled out as expected, if he wasn't playing in the championship he won't be playing in the Premier league. Parrott possibly could be another one.

It makes a bit of a mockery of the whole tournament to be honest.

People I’ve noticed that in Dublin with the squad:

Joe Hodge
Luca Connell
Will Smallbone
Cameron Ledwidge
Oisin McEntee
Jonathan Afolabi

I think Tyreke Wright is in the background of the FAI post too. Wish they’d just announce the squad instead of finding it out piece by piece.

Pleased that Luca is involved. Maybe he sees it as a shop window. The ideal starting 11 for the age group is possibly something like:

Maher

O’Connor
Collins
McEntee
Connell

Coventry
Bolger

Connolly
Parrott
Obafemi

Idah

Interesting to see how many are allowed to go.

the U17 squad wasn't announced until a week before the tournament, so I don't expect to hear anything until around the 7th
I doubt O'Connor, Coventry, Obafemi or Idah will be involved

Hodge is some player. If I were to pick another player for a call up from that under 17 side then it would be Andrew Omobamidele, depending on the necessity for centre halves, of course.

Eirambler
25/06/2019, 6:24 AM
I think Tyreke Wilson is overage for this unfortunately. Which might mean Connell having to play out of position at left back. Would James Furlong be an option from the under 17 squad to play left back?

Also Bazunu in goal maybe?

tetsujin1979
25/06/2019, 6:59 AM
Yeah, Wilson is overage. Born in December 1999, the tournament is for players born on or after 1st January 2000

It's a sign that we are finally stacked with strikers at underage level that you have named four in that team. Granted that Parrott and Connolly can definitely play in the 10 and wide forward positions, respectively.

An all out Klinsmann 4-2-4!

Eirambler
25/06/2019, 9:47 AM
So, based on the training camp list the following eligible players are currently not with the squad:

Gavin Bazunu
Lee O'Connor
Nathan Collins
James Furlong
Conor Coventry
Nathan Carlyle
Jason Knight
Aaron Connolly
Glen McAuley
Michael Obafemi
Adam Idah
Troy Parrott

As well as Ryan Johannson who is underage but ineligible and Armstrong Okoflex who presumably remains uninterested.
