View Full Version : CP or McCarthy

As a born again Limerick fan this season, I find it strange that NOC persists with CP up front. I've had it confrimed that he will start him again tonight ahead of McCarthy. It seems obvious to me that where hunger, desire and most of all ability McCarthy is better. Obviously NOC sees something in him most of the rest of us cannot see. Having not seen CP much last season, I will bow to people of better judgement. On this seasons form, which I thought managers went on, he looks totally out of sorts on the pitch. I guess that NOC will be 'proved' right eventually, even a stopped clock is right once a day.

There is the rub. Perhaps he considers McCarthy and Kelliher too similar. Certainly CP is better in the air than McCarthy and that might be enough - but I agree (based on the Mons match) that he should start McCarthy and Kelliher tonight. It would be interesting to pick NOC's brains on this one. Undoubtedly, McCarthy really is an impact substitution.

well I take on board your suggestion that CP is better in the air but its funny that this season (taking into account that McCarthy has had only a few mins the pitch) he scored against Rovers with a header and had a fantastic angled header against Mons that shaved the post. CP didn't exactly dominate their centre half in either game. Sometimes managers get stubborn about their choices and at the moment this seems to be a case of 'I'll show all of ye who's the boss'. I just hope its not to the detrement of the team.

Hmmm, I'm gonna turn this into a poll I think. For what it's worth, I think McCarthy offers far more than O'Brien. The two games this season have seen O'Brien pick up where he left off.

As for O'Brien being better in the air, he's taller certainly but given his reluctance to engage in anything resembling physical confrontation I really don't think we're any better off with him than Derek. It's strange to me to see hm starting again tonight. Chris Kearns and Mick Ahearn were dropped after the first game despite offering more. Baffles me...

Poll... who do you think should start up front for Limerick as Robbie Kelleher's partner?

Colin IMO is the more talented of the two, but having seen both of them play quite a lot over the last 3 or 4 seasons, I think McCarthy is the better choice. CP just doesn't work enough

He's always done well for us (McCarthy that is), I think most of us were surprised that he and Brendan Hughes flopped so spectacularly with Galway. But it's worked out well enough in that we got them back anyway. :D

You're just too nice to your fellow corkonian! It's not that he doesn't work hard - he doesn't make a blind bit of effort. Honestly, it's like starting games a man down.... :(

guess you havent seen kelleher then? star man trust me if you saw him City would be in with a big fat cheque straight away! He also wins most headers with centre backs way more the Colin. the poll seems amazing though, nearly 96% now for McCarthy, where has all the support for CP gone since the poll to re-sign him was taken, oh i see click on the number of votes and u see whos voted :D open democracy thats the way to go!

someone mustn't have told NOC about the poll because I heard through the reliable grapevine that Derek isn't starting tonight

Conor H, It'd be a bit hard for Derek to do anything for us when he was left on the bench or not even picked for the squad half the time

I'm glad we don't use democracy to pick football teams myself. :ball:

neither Brendan Hughes or Derek McCarthy got a fair chance in Galway. Beats me why he bothered signing them if he didn't want to gve them a chance and they are both far better than some of the dead wood in Galway at the moment. Would gladly take them back

All football managers are dictators - just some are more benign than others. You can't pick a team by consensus - ask Graham Taylor who let the newspapers pick his England teams. :)

And Graham Taylor does he not like orange...but with all dictators/football managers they are usually overthrown in time by the good people/football fans who loathe their regime. I don't know about you though but I think thats enough use of fascist analogies for the moment :)
