Looks like Hughton is targeting a run in the cup. Near full strength team with no room for Connolly on the bench. Disappointing.
I wouldn't so much mind that but he managed to bring on 20 year old Viktor Gyokeres who has far less goals for the under 23 side than Connolly has.

Ogbene on bench for Brentford the Exeter loan didn't seem to be an outstanding success.
Travers on bench for Bournemouth.

Lovren has gone off injured and a 16 year-old by the name of Ki-Jana Hoever has come in. Fair to assume Masterson has a loan lined up so?

*Cough* I noted it in the 2019 transfer thread. When I saw him in the FC Dordrecht squad, I couldn't find anything in a news search. A Twitter search showed he had scored a couple of hours previously for Cardiff 23s. It could well be a trial though?

No goals for Irish players in today's game between Norwich and Villa, but the assists for all three goals were credited to them - two for Idah and one for Clarke: https://www.premierleague.com/match/39378/premier-league-2/2018-19/norwich-v-aston-villa

Didn't realise he was captain there. That Southampton 17-19 bucket is our new Aston Villa. Aaron O'Driscoll, Ferry, Smallbone, Afolabi, Obafemi and O'Connor. Hopefully at least one more follows Obafemi into the first team.

Ali Reghba has scored two goals tonight for the Leicester U23's apparently. He is on trial there from Bohs.

Wow, that's terrific, and on his birthday too! We'll add him to the ever-lengthening list of young strikers to watch.
Speaking of that list, Jonathan Afolabi got another goal for Southampton U23s last night (also on his nineteenth birthday!) - starting to take advantage of the opportunity given to him from Obafemi's promotion. There were rumours that Celtic were interested before Christmas, but then they brought in Weah and Bayo, so I guess he'll have to wait a little longer: https://www.premierleague.com/match/39380/premier-league-2/2018-19/middlesbrough-v-southampton
Meanwhile, Oisin McEntee scored for Newcastle U23s against West Brom: https://www.premierleague.com/match/39381/premier-league-2/2018-19/newcastle-v-west-brom

Interesting article on McEntee below. Certainly appears to have the right attitude and athleticism. Obviously highly rated as United were coveting him also. Could definitely be one for the future:

Reghba mooted to be signing for Leicester here. I love how they refer to him as a "Germany-born Algerian" even though he's lived here most of his life. Oh, and isn't his mother Irish?

There is a book to be wrote on that group for later generations, maybe not those of us who had to live through some of it. Drennan moving home and then leaving the game, Carruthers dropping down the leagues and getting caught ****ing in a glass at the races, Burke coming home before making his international debut and going back over and, of course, Grealish defecting.
Now that Obafemi refused the chance to defect, can the lads keep away from racetracks?

In fairness, we have got three fringe players (Williams, Burke and Stevens) out of it. And speaking of Irish underage players at Villa, Jake Doyle-Hayes scored in the Premier League Cup: https://www.avfc.co.uk/News/2019/01/18/the-verdict-bristol-city-u23s-0-3-aston-villa-u23s

The final of the Asian Cup is on the 1st February, so Son won't be away too much longer, if South Korea even make it that far. They play Bahrain in the last 16 tomorrow. I'd say Parrott's only slight possibility of first team involvement would be the F.A. Cup match against Crystal Palace on Sunday. That might be deemed too tough a fixture to bed in too.

Ouch... what did Vincent Janssen do to upset Pochettino? https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/46839114
Fernando Llorente is expected to play in attack for Spurs, who will still not turn to forgotten striker Vincent Janssen despite their current injury problems.
Janssen's last appearance for Spurs was as an 89th-minute replacement against Chelsea in August 2017 and the Dutch striker hasn't played a single game this season.
"I think it's so clear that now it's one year and a half that he's not in our plans," Mauricio Pochettino said.
"He's not in Tottenham's plans. Not in just the manager's plans but the club's plan.
"Eighteen months ago we took the decision for him to try to find a different place to play because for different reasons it didn't work.
"For different reasons that professional relationship isn't working and we need to find a solution. We are trying to find the resolution."

Quivi Fowler looked to have liked out for Cardiff last week again, this time against Ipswich who had Drinan, Cotter and McLoughlin starting, all of whom could do with getting back into the reckoning at senior level at Ipswich or elsewhere. Unlikely to get opportunities there given the perilous position the club is in.
