A few weeks ago, I was asked on twitter if the number of Irish players has dropped across all four divisions in England. It took a little while to get the data together, and it's bad news. Apart from a short bump in numbers in the four seasons after Euro 2012, the numbers of players appearing in league football, it's been a consistent downward slide in participation since 2008-09.

Hadn't heard about Aaron Molloy in the US until I saw the highlight video below on twitter earlier this week.
Seems to be impressing in the college system according to this: https://onwardstate.com/2018/10/04/the-irish-messi-aaron-molloys-trans-atlantic-odyssey/

Interesting route by him. Extratime.ie says he was under 19 POTY for Bohs, the following season went to Drogheda and played 13 times for the senior side.

A season's high on one day I'm assuming? Burnley are playing Monday night so there could be 8 over a round of fixtures.

Yeah, for one day.
In 2012, seven players started one game!

Clark starts for Newcastle to make that 9 over this round.

Coleman, Christie, Duffy, Clark, Cunningham, Long, Brady, Doherty and Rice? Pity that Brady is the only offensive player of the group. Pity we can't play 4 full backs every match- although MON had a penchant for playing 3.

Harry Arter started too, 10 all weekend with Hendrick and Obafemi making substitute appearances. Not bad considering Shane Long, Stephen Ward and James McCarthy all would have a good chance of featuring if fit and only 14 Irish have minutes this season.
Plenty of U23s have chances of featuring at some stage this season (Coventry has made the bench for example)
Others such as Rob Elliot, Brian Murphy, Anthony Pilkington and loanees like Jon Walters, Richie Towell, Jimmy Dunne, Tommie Hoban and Josh Cullen will probably not however.

They pointed out on Newstalk this morning that Manchester United play Arsenal tonight, minus an Alex Ferguson and/or Arsène Wenger involvement for the first time since 1986.
They made the point that there were six Irish starters that day (they included Norman Whiteside in this) - https://www.11v11.com/matches/arsenal-v-manchester-united-23-august-1986-88098/

Kieran Westwood played for the first half of Crewe Alexandra U-23s v Shefield Wed U-23s on 10 Dec; Ciaran Brennan also started for The Owls. Kevin O'Connor played for Crewe, having had few League 2 appearances so far this season.
Andy Boyle started in Dundee's 1 - 1 draw with Rangers, replacing the injured Darren O'Dea.
Norwich City are arranging a testimonial for Wes Hoolahan and Russell Martin on 6 May 2019; Team Wes will take on Team Russ, with Temple St Hospital Dublin one of the charities due to benefit.

That's terribly sad. He was held in high esteem in Spain because of his media work - to show how high, I read a story in a newspaper years ago written by an Irish journalist who had gone to visit him in Spain and they went to a game together. They were approached by an elderly Spanish gentleman who seemed delighted to meet Robinson started speaking effusively to him in Spanish and it was quite clear he was a big admirer. When he left the journalist asked "who was that oul fella", to which Robinson responded "Alfredo Di Stefano".
I hope he finds peace in the difficult times ahead.

Hendrick might be credited with a goal too maybe, his shot definitely looked on target before being diverted in. That said, Shane Long's may well have been off target. When was the last time we had four goalscorers?

Checked this out, there was one other time when four players scored on the same day, it was 5th May 2001 - Carr, Kilbane, Quinn, and Harte all scored
There's been only one day when five Irish players scored, 29th August 1992 - Lee Power, Eddie McGoldrick, Niall Quinn, Mike Milligan, and Ronnie Whelan

If it wasn't for bad luck, Rob Elliot would have no luck at all. Last week, Derby Co. were reportedly having a look at him. Now, according to the Evening Chronicle, he has sustained a back injury and NUFC's hopes of selling him "have gone up in smoke with the player potentially requiring an operation". Elliot is on contract until June 2020, but Benitez wanted to off-load him.

I reckon I'd know people in Dublin who have never heard of Sporting Fingal. Is this a new gut test for second generation players - unless they know all the defunct LoI teams of their lifetime they should be looked on with suspicion? Anyway, can you imagine the damage to the league's reputation if Killer's answer had included words like vanity project, wild west regulation, developers, bankrupt, crazy league, only one of many, and (the shame!) happened on John Delaney's watch...?
