Thought I'd set up a thread for overall Irish involvement of note in English/Scottish pre-season friendlies as they have just kicked off. As Tets noted in the player's thread, Reece Grego-Cox is on trial with Crawley Town and scored against Fulham.

Elsewhere, Damien Rice, Josh Cullen and, perhaps most interestingly, Conor Coventry all played half a game for West Ham against Winterthur: https://www.whufc.com/news/articles/2018/july/08-july/west-ham-given-good-workout-winterthur

I noticed Caomhain Kelleher is on the list of players training with the Liverpool first team in pre season, but Masterson is omitted: https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/305613-liverpool-fc-players-pre-season-training-melwood
Could be something, could be nothing.

As mentioned in another thread, Ryan Nolan is in with the first team squad for Inter's pre-season. Not too shabby.

Edit: does it have to be UK?

Yeah, when I was naming the thread I was thinking about whether or not to say "UK preseason", specifically with Nolan in mind, but I thought he's the only one outside the UK and calling the thread "Irish involvement in UK Pre-season... and Ryan Nolan" didn't seem to have the right ring to it. But yes, any sign of Nolan making progress towards the Inter first team should certainly be included - if he could make it as a defender in an Italian club, that would be awesome.

Went along to see Stamford Town / Peterborough last week, O'Malley started for Peterborough in goals, played the first half. He did fine, it was a handy enough match for his side, handled and kicked fine, kept a clean sheet. Trouble is he was replaced at HT by the newly signed keeper who is 6ft 7 / 6ft 8, depending where you google him, anyway he and O'Malley don't even look like the same species standing next to each other, never mind two men competing for the same shirt. Chapman, the new keeper was promoted from L2 last season and made the PFA team of the season for that league, he has also started both friendlies since with O'Malley yet to feature again so far. So after ending last season in the side and doing well, he has it all to do again by the looks of it.

We badly need to get Ryan Nolan in the squad in time for Qatar. Heard a stat that Inter have had a player in every World Cup final since 1982.

Edit: As have Bayern. Added impetus for us to get Ryan Johansson on side.

Call him up MON! Seriously, I know it's still only pre-season, but that's a great achievement. Fingers crossed that he impressed enough to stay involved with the senior squad this season (or at least gets a decent loan move to kick-start his senior career)

The Spanish FA are sniffing around and we have barely capped him at international level.

The lad clearly has great talent. He needs to be put into our u19s immediately or possibly an u21 squad.

I'm guessing he is likely to go to a Serie B team on loan either this year or next. If not, maybe a lowly serie a team. Even being around the first team squad at a club like Inter is huge.

I know I'm being facetious when I say call him up, but this should be a wake-up call for MON to get in touch and find out what Nolan's international ambitions are and let him know we're interested. He hasn't been capped competitively at underage level and apparently Spain are showing a bit of an interest - there may be an option for him to play for the U21s in their final group games if Declan Rice continues to play for the senior team this autumn

His parents emigrated to Spain when he was a child, so I think he would qualify on residency. He was spotted there by a scout from Inter, who brought him to Italy

Crikey, that's brilliant. I thought when they split the team for pre-season and he was left with the U23s that it would mean at least another season before we could expect him to get serious first-team action (which would still be just fine, considering he's only 17) - but if this is an indication of how the next few months will go for him, surely management at Norwich might give him a look earlier in the season - perhaps in an EFL game.

Came on after 60 minutes so well done to him - https://www.rovers.co.uk/news/2018/july/report-liverpool-h/ - not only that, within fifteen minutes of coming on, Liverpool had scored twice - the outfielders must have felt more secure with him between the sticks than Karius! Suddenly that GBP66.8m is starting to look like an unnecessary panic buy!

On the other side, Derrick Williams and Darragh Lenihan helped keep Liverpool scoreless for an hour, and within 15 minutes of them going off, Blackburn had conceded twice!

Great for Dunne. I know Accrington were (and maybe.are) very keen to get him back for their season in League One. It will be interesting to see if he ends up there, a Championship club or maybe Burnley for the season.

Up until now, Dunne, Hoban, Cullen and Nolan seemed to be the young players to watch in top tiers this pre-season, but then today Chris Hughton gave sub appearances to Daniel Mandroiu and Aaron Connolly, with Connolly winning the penalty that Brighton scored from. Richie Towell also came on in the second half. Unfortunately, Shane Duffy went off with an injury after 21 minutes: https://www.brightonandhovealbion.com/news/2018/july/match-report-for-afc-wimbledon-vs-brighton-and-hove-albion-on-21-jul-18/

Meanwhile, Tyreke Wilson did make it to the bench for Man City's tie with Borussia Dortmund, but didn't come on - still quite an achievement, given that there's about a million players in the squad - hopefully it's a sign that he's close to a breakthrough, if not with City themselves, then via a decent loan: https://www.mancity.com/news/first-team/match-report/2018/july/man-city-v-borussia-dortmund-international-champions-cup-match-report-21-july

Speaking of Ryan Nolan, he was an unused sub in Inter's 3-3 draw with Zenit St. Petersburg: https://www.inter.it/en/news/63461/interontour-inter-3-3-zenit-st-petersburg-
