Up until now, Dunne, Hoban, Cullen and Nolan seemed to be the young players to watch in top tiers this pre-season, but then today Chris Hughton gave sub appearances to Daniel Mandroiu and Aaron Connolly, with Connolly winning the penalty that Brighton scored from. Richie Towell also came on in the second half. Unfortunately, Shane Duffy went off with an injury after 21 minutes: https://www.brightonandhovealbion.com/news/2018/july/match-report-for-afc-wimbledon-vs-brighton-and-hove-albion-on-21-jul-18/

Meanwhile, Tyreke Wilson did make it to the bench for Man City's tie with Borussia Dortmund, but didn't come on - still quite an achievement, given that there's about a million players in the squad - hopefully it's a sign that he's close to a breakthrough, if not with City themselves, then via a decent loan: https://www.mancity.com/news/first-team/match-report/2018/july/man-city-v-borussia-dortmund-international-champions-cup-match-report-21-july

Speaking of Ryan Nolan, he was an unused sub in Inter's 3-3 draw with Zenit St. Petersburg: https://www.inter.it/en/news/63461/interontour-inter-3-3-zenit-st-petersburg-

I work with Tyreke Wilson's aunt and he got an infection in his toe so they were all worried he might not get game time over there. They seem like a lovely family and he sounds like a really good lad too. She doesn't know much about football but reading between the lines from what she was saying City want to get him a loan to a championship team and they seemed to have turned down offers from some clubs.

Caoimhin Kelleher was on the bench again for Liverpool. This time, though it was their other underage keeper, Kamil Grabara, who got to replace Karius - shipped three goals though (that said, it was against Dortmund) - https://www.theguardian.com/football/live/2018/jul/22/liverpool-borussia-dortmund-live-friendly-international-champions-cup?page=with:block-5b54ee18e4b0f7abbc8f11b1#liveblog-navigation

In what might set a record for Irish players on the pitch in a game not involving any Irish teams, Burnley are playing Preston tonight at Deepdale.
Preston: Robinson, Burke and Maguire start, Browne and Horgan are on the bench.
(Boyle, Doyle, O'Connor and O'Reilly missing)

Burnley: Hendrick and Ward start, Walters, Long and Dunne are on the bench.
(Brady missing)

GOAL PNE!
Really well worked goal from the Lilywhites as Graham Burke regained possession wide right with an interception before feeding Maguire on the opposite flank. He cut back inside and played Josh Harrop into space in the box, who converted coolly into the far bottom left corner!

Goal Burnley.
Aaron Lennon the goalscorer after Burnley got to the byline with Hendrick having his initial shot blocked from closer range, before the ball fell nicely for the winger on the edge of the box and he lashed it home with an emphatic first time strike.

Doesn't look like this trio are part of Alex Neil's plans - Boyle and Doyle should probably be looking for a move to a decent League One team; O'Connor, as he's still only 23, could try to get another loan move to build on.

Not sure. The Arsenal team of the 1970s had 5 or 6 Irish players which could have been facing another team with 3 Irish players.

I reckon a Villa v Man City game in 93-94 would have to be close. Likely we had 7 full internationals on the pitch if it was before Quinner did his knee.

Of course that was Premier League, briefly before that game, Tets again had done the research for other divisions:

Best I can find in the Irish Abroad database in the Premier League is Man City VS Sunderland from 2007 with 6 players
5-Nov-2007
Manchester City 1-0 Sunderland
Manchester City's starting players: Richard Dunne Stephen Ireland
Sunderland's starting players: Ian Harte Anthony Stokes(substituted on 58 minutes) Liam Miller Daryl Murphy(substituted on 58 minutes)
Sunderland's substitutes: Graham Kavanagh David Connolly

Overall, the most players I have is nine starting players in two separate games - Sunderland - Luton in 2007 and Ipswich - Scunthorpe in 2010
13-Mar-2010
Ipswich 1-0 Scunthorpe
Ipswich's starting players: David Norris Damien Delaney Brian Murphy Jonathan Walters Owen Garvan(substituted on 74 minutes) Daryl Murphy(substituted on 50 minutes) Shane O'Connor
Scunthorpe's starting players: Joe Murphy Cliff Byrne
Scunthorpe's substitutes: Donal McDermott

9-Dec-2006
Sunderland 2-1 Luton
Sunderland's starting players: Stephen Elliott Liam Miller Graham Kavanagh David Connolly(substituted on 78 minutes) Daryl Murphy
Luton's starting players: Dean Kiely Kevin Foley Lewis Emanuel David Bell

Hopefully not serious - promising news that Hughton started him. Mandroiu and Connolly came on as second-half subs for the second game in a row, which is also promising - Connolly had a couple of chances saved by the Charlton keeper: https://www.brightonandhovealbion.com/matches/fixtures/first-team/2018192/july/charlton-athletic/

Having signed for Sheffield united mere hours before, David McGoldrick scored in the 1-1 draw with Inter - CALL HIM BACK UP, MON!! John Egan and Enda Stevens also played for United, while Ryan Nolan was an unused sub for Inter: https://www.inter.it/en/news/63487/interontour-the-nerazzurri-leave-sheffield-with-a-draw

Young goalkeeper from cork. Highly rated by Klopp according to report last season: http://www.punditarena.com/football/nmenezes/liverpool-klopp-praises-kelleher/amp/ Nice to see him get some preseason game time at his young age.

His brother Fiacre is a center half moved to Celtic when younger, now with oxford. Did well on loan with solihull in conference last season, but unfortunately has already been farmed out in another season long loan to league 2 newcomers Macclesfield, augurs not well at age of 22. You never know though, tall uncompromising center half

Thanks for the heads-up - great to see that he replaced Karius for the second-half and appears to have done well, making at least one good save as Liverpool went on to win 2-1; https://www.liverpoolfc.com/match/2018-19/first-team/tour-2018-day-five

Kelleher is a young Irish keeper (age 19) who has underage caps under his belt - I saw him on a highlights package on the FAI site for an U-17s game, I think, a few years ago and he looked raw but made a couple of remarkable saves. Liverpool signed him up a little while after and he's been alternating between their U18 and U23 teams in competition with a young Polish keeper called Kamil Grabara, who played the second half against Borussia Dortmund recently. Kelleher also played the second half against Blackburn recently so this should be a cause for excitement, particularly as Liverpool are shedding goalies -Danny Ward sold to Leicester, Adam Bogdan on season-long loan to Hibs and either Mignolet or Karius likely to be sold also.

However, his position does mitigate any belief that he'll see significant action soon, as he's not going to get run-outs in the last 20 minutes of a game, like an outfielder can - if he's not first-choice, he'll have to wait for either an injury or major loss of form to the first-choice, which brings us to the other reason why we can't get as excited about his appearances as we might - Alisson

Still, it's quite an achievement to play twice in a pre-season for the Liverpool first team at the age of 19, the second game in front of 52,000 against Man City (and get two wins under your belt). So hopefully it's a sign that he'll get competitive first-team football sooner rather than later, either with a loan move or some game-time in the cups this season.

For now here's the save he made tonight:

That article says his mother is Swedish and father Irish. It's the other way around?

And how could Luxembourg pay him money to stay with them?

Not quite sure who he will declare for or if he has played for sweden. I understand his mother is Irish. From my research he has a brother called sean.

You would imagine that if he becomes a top player and is breaking into Bayern's team or goes on loan to another club and is doing well, he will either declare for sweden or ireland. While we aren't a top team, he would feel confident of playing in tournaments with us whereas luxembourg are unlikely to make a tournament. From a purely clinical point of view, i think he is unlikely to stay with them.

Because how many potential top players have Luxembourg ever had? Exactly, not sure where but a decent source said the Luxembourg FA absolutely desperate to keep him and are going all out to do so plus let’s remember he was raised in Luxembourg anyway so for all we know Luxembourg is already a choice he has his heart on.

You haven't answered my question. How are they paying him "big bucks"? Is he on an annual contract from the Lux FA? Have they bought his parents a house? I never disputed "how many potential top players" Luxembourg have had. I asked how they could pay him.

That part wasn’t explained, wouldn’t rule out skullduggery here. For the record I hope this is all bull**** and he lines out for us but bar skullduggery on our part I can’t see it as it appears Sweden are his number 2.

I would have thought so, but there are rumours that Mignolet could be on his way to Besiktas, which would just leave Alisson and Karius as first team 'keepers... could that leave a squad place open for Kelleher or Grabara, perhaps for cup games? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-5999793/Besiktas-enter-talks-Mignolet-deal-Olympiacos-target-Markovic.html

That's a very strong team that Dunne has been named in. And we spoke during the week about him being left out of the team against Aberdeen. In fairness, Hendrick is the only player named in both sides but that's a team of players that will be pushing for starts this season in many cases. Given, however, that Long is probably not going to start if Mee and Tarkowski are fit (and not sold) then it might be better for Dunne to get a loan.
