For the benefit of people who don't know much about betting (me), what's the percentage about?

For example, if the odds are evens (1/1), that means that the result will happen 50% of the time, 2/1 will happen 33%, etc. The percentage listed is the sum of the three (home win, away win, draw). The higher it is, the higher the bookies' profit margin (100% is a 'fair' set of odds).

Schumi is right but his explaination is a little hard to understand for newbies. Say there is a match where there is equal chance of Team A wining, Team B winning and a draw, right. Only three possible outcomes. So the odds should be 2/1 for each possible outcome i.e. TeamA win 2/1 Draw 2/1 and Team B win 2/1. So you could bet on all three with the same stake and break-even. But what the bookies do to guarentee them profit the dont pay you the full amout that you should win, most of the time in soccer matchs they take a 12% profit margin also called the overrounds.

A better example is flipping a coin, you have two outcomes, heads or tails, so 50% chance of both happening so you have a bet with a friend that it will land on heads and you bet a euro so if you win you get a euro and if you lose you lose a euro. In a fifty decision like this say under/over 2.5 goals you wouldn't be getting that full euro if the chances were 50-50 of over/under 2.5 goals.

Hope this helps, I'm in the process of setting up a website to do with this type of craic and general betting in the EL and had hoped to launch it for the league KO with hitting some tech problems that I dont understand, I'll let you know when its up and running.

BTW, this is why the exchanges (Betfair or Betdaq) are better as their markets bet to or close to 100%, you do have to pay commision of 5% or less with Betfair and 3% or less with Betdaq.

Cork at better than 1/2 (1.5) look good, might have a wager. Any thoughts?

Then you call Tolka Park for advice on rule 93/17/3, get Ollie to make a stink, and end up with the bookies on 90%!

coltron are you a member of Punters Lounge?

The Kilkenny-Dundalk game has been switched to Waterworld, sorry Buckley Park, so those prices no longer stand true, more like 6/4 each team now.
