No points for the home side again but at least a vastlyimproved performance by Wexford as they lost out to a useful Longford Town XI in Ferrycarrig tonight. Wexford started with Kealan, AJ, Ross, Owen, Sean, Mark, Mikey, Crokey, Ryan, Liam and withShane Barnes up front. Wexford worked much harder than against UCD and stayed in the game as a result. Although the first half was shaded by Longford, Wexford created the first real chance on six minutes when Mark Slatercrossed low for Shane Barnes and his low goal-bound shot was blocked by Kellyin the Longford goal with his legs. Longford then followed with a decent chance of their own on the quarter hour mark when a volley from inside the box was saved by Gaffney in the Wexford goal. In the 21st minute,Wexford conceded a soft goal when a corner by Longford was played to McDonnell standing on his own on the edge of the area and his first-time volley gave Gaffney no chance for 1-0 to Longford. With Shane Barnes looking fairly isolated up front for the home side, Wexford found it hard to trouble Kelly in the Longford goal for the remainder of the game, but the work ethic was definitely there as Wexford continued to try to win back the ball from a Longford team attempting to retain possession as much as possible. Two reasonable saves by Gaffney, who is impressing more and more in each game, then ended the half as he gathered a looping header by a Longford attacker near his top corner and then grabbed tidily a good drive on goal by Longford’s best player, Dylan McGlade. 1-0 to Longford at half-time.

Second half was poorer than the first period with little ofnote other than Longford’s second goal which killed off the game. It came on 55 minutes when a Longford corner led to two headers won by the away team, the final touch being at the far post by a Longford attacker for 2-0. Remainder of the game was untidy for the most part with Wexford subsbeing Dean Kelly, Danny Doyle and Dean George. A Longford attempt to lob Kealan Gaffney was cleared off the line late on by Ross Kenny. Best for Wexford when the players showed more pride in the jersey were Mikey Byrne, Ross Kenny, Sean Hurley and Mark Slater, while in addition to man of match Dylan McGlade, McDonnell and O’Reilly impressed for Longford. 2-0 to Longford at full-time. Attendance, including season tickets, was 174.
