Competitive game in Ferrycarrig tonight in which Wexford shaded the 90 minutes, but ultimately Cobh progressed following an 8-7 penalty shoot-out. Wexford made eight changes from the XI which started against Longford and went with Gaffney, McCormack, Lehane, S. Kelly, Morgan, Croke, Nolan, George, McCartan and with Danny Doyleand Eoin Wall up front. It took both sides a fair while to settle down, but the first chance fell to Wexford on ten minutes when Danny Doyle had a difficult header which proved an easy catch for the impressive Paul Hunt in the Cobh goal. Crokey then had a shot a yard over following a good Wexford move. Wexford's Dean George nearly put Doyle through on goal before, on 25 minutes, Cobh had their first effort on goal but it was easy for Gaffney in the Wexford goal. Best chance for Wexford came just after the half-hour mark when Wexford’s McCartan forced Hunt to save with his legs. 0-0 at half-time with Wexford having been the dominant team.

Second half was more even as Cobh came more into the game and chances became even scarcer as the breeze strengthened even more. Just before the hour mark, Wexford had a shot deflected just over the Cobh bar following a corner. Wexford subs as the half progressed were Aaron O’Connor, Shane Barnes and Aaron Dobbs. Kaelan Gaffney then made a good save right at the end of the ninety to keep the game at 0-0. The two periods of 15 minutes extra time failed to separate the two sides and the match went to penalties. Both sides missed their fourth penalties with Hunt saving and then Gaffney pushing the Cobh spot-kick onto the post and away. Sudden death and Wexford’s Liam McCartan eventually saw his shot saved low right by Hunt to enable Cobh to progress on an 8-7 scoreline. Best for Wexford were Sean Kelly, Thomas Croke, AJ Lehane and Danny Doyle.
