Irish comic legend Dave Allen dies
Dave Allen, the Irish comedian who became a household name on British television in the 1970s and 1980s, has died. He was 68.

Allen died in his sleep at his West London home.

He had been ill for some time, according to his agent Vivienne Clore.

Allen was best known for his hit shows 'Tonight with Dave Allen' and 'Dave Allen at Large'.

He is survived by his wife Karin and three children.

The other guy was Miah (Jere-Miah!" I presume), made famous by Hall's Pictorial Weekly, who went on to grace many's a pre-Hurling All-Ireland special in the 80's and early 90's when the Pictorial Weekly was ditched by RTE for being both good and popular.

Very funny for the seventies. While all the other so-called 'comics' (w*nkers) were either taking the p*ss out of the Irish or themselves as Irish people (Frank 'the W*nk' Carson and Jimmy 'the pr*ck' Cricket), Allen got down to actually doing stuff that wouldn't have looked out of sorts in the eighties. I liked him and Benny Hill: the rest I'd put up against the wall - The two 'thick Paddies' mentioned along with those other unfunny tw*ts on 'The Comedians' (sic.); Morecombe & Wise; and last but most definitely not least, Tommy Cooper.

Allen came back in the eighties with another show: Memorable joke was about Americans using the word 'sh*t' for every purpose except the thing that it is.

Allen: I went all the way from New York to California by car.

American: No sh*t!

Allen: Actually yes. One in St Louis. Another in Denver. :D

Also about putting your head between your legs if the plane is going to crash: Is that so as you can kiss your a*se goodbye?

whats wrong with tommy cooper :(Agree, was a bit harsh on Tommy and M&W. They were to me just unfunny, unlike the others who's denigration of the Irish leaves me bitter. Don't for a minute assume that people didn't take this stereotyping seriously in the seventies. It extended in my experience to teachers at my school.

A sad loss. I loved Dave Allen as a kid and, as Lopez says, he was one of the few (only?) good Irish comedians of that era. He had great style and had a good bash at the church in the days when few did.In agreement! :eek: Actually he was right about the church. In fact looking at Father Ted (peadophile and drunken priests, bishops fathering illegitimate children, the way the church treat women and gays) he was quite tame in retrospect. Just ironic that certain people would jam the BBC complaints desk about this and say nothing about Manning, Davidson, Cricket, etc. In fact I'd go so far as to say certain Irish people (eg. My father) were more offended by this than the more tamer 'thick Paddy' jokes.
