Sunday 11th Feb 2018 in Oriel Park at 2pm.

Dundalk close out their pre-season on Wednesday with a match v Brentford b.
We currently have a squad of 20.Hoban is currently hobbled and rumour is he will miss this game.Mountney also and Stephen O'Donnell too.
Expecting a big crowd in attendance at Oriel for the match(Many Cork coming?)

Haven't really been following Cork in preseason,so would be interested to hear the latest from there?

Can't imagine many travelling for Presidents Cup, but the time will allow a few of our fans in Dublin to make it. Early start on a Sunday from Cork though.

Our pre season has been a bit all over the place. Few games called off because of pitches etc. We've played UCC, Cobh and waterford u19s in the MSC. Hard to say much on any of the games really. We've a game today but not a proper friendly i don't think. Then we're off to Manchester and I think they're hoping for a game there. Presidents cup will be the first proper challenge I'd say.

Buckley and Tobi have gotten injured. McNamee looks good. That's about it really.

Think I saw a bus advertised travelling from Cork, early enough start for a 2pm ko. I'd say Cork will fill the 150 or so seats that are reserved in the front of the stand. I certainly wouldn't be travelling if it was vice versa.

Will be interesting to see how the two Derry lads settle in, I wouldn't have minded Barry, stylish type of defender. Should be a decent challenge for both sides, and has been the same for this match since the event was re-launched some years back.

The attendance will be interesting also, essentially a friendly but season proper pre opener, so maybe 2k +

It'l be interesting to see who starts for us. There's a lot of possible combinations right now. Barry or Kane at the back. Horgan or Beattie right back. Attacking midfield when Buckley is back etc. Interesting times ahead!

... the event was re-launched some years back.

The previous President's Cup referred to the President of the LFA, and was in theory played between the top Leinster clubs of the previous season. Introduced in 1930 as a fundraiser for the new LFA headquarters in Parnell Square, it has not been played since 2002/3. There's a detailed history with stats here (https://leagueofirelandhistory.wordpress.com/tag/lfa-presidents-cup/).

The current President's Cup was presented by Michael D Higgins in 2014, is a completely new trophy and is specifically for the Champions v Cupwinners (or runners-up/losers in case of doubles).

President's Cup history to date:
2014 St Patricks Athletic 1-0 Sligo Rovers
2015 Dundalk 2-1 St Patricks Athletic
2016 Cork City 1-0 Dundalk
2017 Cork City 3-0 Dundalk

But haven't the FAI streamed matches from Oriel before?

2-0 Murray again. Dundalk well on top by the sounds of it. Our back 5 all over the place.

2-1 Sheppard. Who then got clattered as he scored. He's hurt.

It's been streamed the last 2 years from turner's Cross. Can't do it from oriel apparently.

2-2 McNamee. We're a different team this half apparently.

They did it in 2016 but now I think of it, I don't remember seeing it last year. Would have been worth watching as any game between Dundalk and Cork is.

Sadlier with a screamer. 3 of our front 4 scoring is a great sign. Coming back from 2 down shows great character too. Hopefully they can hold out now

Coming back from 2 down and our front 4 all scoring. Can't ask for more than that in prep for next week. Especially considering the weekend that's in it.

Very impressive comeback.

Did the pitch/snow impact the game at all in the end? Can't have been an easy one to play I'd have thought?

micls
11/02/2018, 3:12 PM
Sounds like it had a big impact in the first half but eased off before the second half.

El-Pietro
11/02/2018, 3:30 PM
Ball was getting held up loads in the snow in the first half. We struggled to get it forward. Lino was calling us offside everytime we managed to get into anything resembling a good position. I have no idea what the first goal was like. We couldn't see the ball for a good ten or so minutes. Cherrie was poor for the second as were our whole defence.
Second half we were much better. Changed our right hand side bringing on Beattie and Sheppard for Horgan and Keohane and it changed the game. We'd had no intensity first half. Straight into tackles after half time. Sheppard scored a carbon copy of a bunch of his goals from last year and got clattered in the process. Sadlier broke down the left and crossed to McNamee who headed back across the goal for the second.
Third was a screamer from Sadlier. 25 yards or so. McEleney would have been proud of it. Fourth was a tap in from Cummins after a low cross from Sadlier (I think).
It's a pre season friendly when you lose and it matters when you win but with that much of a turn around you'd wonder what Dundalk are thinking.

Serious comeback by Cork by the sounds of things. Sadlier showed everybody how good he was last season with that goal vs Pats, wonder if today's strike was as good. Terrible day countrywide, the match looked close to being called off judging by various photos?

El-Pietro
11/02/2018, 4:50 PM
At one nil I was suggesting it be called off. There was very little visibility, ball holding up due to snow, and lots of players receiving treatment.

oriel
11/02/2018, 4:52 PM
The classic game of two half’s. Dundalk should have really been 3 up at ht, McGrath had a great chance and superb save by Cherrie right on ht. Most of the first 45 played in a mini snow storm.

Dundalk were missing two first choice defenders and ended up with Shields playing centre half for most of the second half and paired with Folan, MF battle lost immediately, Benson offered nothing, how Connolly stayed on was a mystery, dreadful performances to name but two.

To be fair the 3rd goal from Sadlier and the 4th from Cummins were excellent strikes / moves, very disappointing second half collapse from Dundalk but credit to Cork for such a brilliant second half display. Worthy winners.

Ps pleased to see common sense prevail and DFC stwewards letting Cork fans into the stand when the storm kicked off, though not all took up the offer !

Doubt it, both sides were not at full strength.

On the game, We were in total control at half time. Cork in total control in second half although we should have got a pen at 2-2 (laughable decision on fairness). Cork def deserved the win as they were more ruthless in second half than us in the first.

Should be an interesting season, won’t be a kick or the ball between us two and possibly Rovers

Brilliant game at Oriel today, had it all, as did the weather. Dundalk were brilliant in the first half but at the same time you were asking yourself when Cork were going to actually turn up. Adorján looks a class act for Dundalk he’s not fully fit yet hence why he came off but he does everything in his own time and is a big tall strong fecker who can push opponents away.

Turning point of this game was Shields having to move into CB after Hoare went off injured. Dundalk had absolutely zero physicality in midfield in the second half and Cork absolutely ran all over them in midfield with McCormack and McNamee dominating the middle and sending the ball wide to Sadlier and Sheppard who simply took Dundalk to the cleaners.

Rogers as fault for the first, hesitated off his line and when he rushed out it was too late and he was actually lucky Sheppard scored or he’d have been sent off. Kenny seriously needs to look at getting a top keeper in, how often are we going to see this from Rogers?

Second was a break away from Cork and McNamee unmarked back post with a wonderful headed finish.

Sadlier left in acres for the 3rd in center of the pitch, again a sign of Shields loss but boy did he take it well.

4th was a brilliant finish from Cummins who looks to be in good shape physically, can see him scoring plenty of those this season, Wickid cross from wide and he opened his foot up and smashed it in on the half volley from inside the 6 yard box.

Connolly, McGrath and Duffy add absolutely nothing to that Dundalk team. Kenny would swap them for Sheppard, Sadlier and McNamee any day of the week and he’d be lying if he said otherwise.

Dundalk were far too nice today, no bite or grit in them at all. O’Donnell would’ve made a huge difference but how much longer can he keep going? The Lithuanian fella didn’t play either plus Hoban is no where near fit plus Gartland and Gannon were missing.

Had Gartland been available Shields wouldn’t have had to vacate the midfield and maybe things would’ve been different but for a club with the resources of Dundalk not to have more options in that defensive midfield role is poor management. Kenny needs to get a few gritty players into the midfield or all the luxury players in the world aren’t worth a sh1te.

Dundalk are undoubtedly a better footballing team than cork but as I said they were far too nice today, nobody to stick a boot in and break the play up. On today’s basis cork have got to be favorites for the title but there’s not a lot in it as we already knew. Fantastic start to the season tho. One of the most heated rivalries the LOI has ever seen if you ask me. So much hatred between the sides and it will only grow from here.

Great analysis from outspoken there.
Thought Dundalk were excellent first half, played good football and utterly dominated in poor conditions. Cork were excellent second half and showed the usual tenacity and guts. They’re a nightmare to play against, and I mean that as a compliment. Playing with just two defenders and no defensive midfielder against Cork proved a challenge, but maybe if we’d signed one or two more defensive players instead of 17 attacking midfielders we’d be better balanced.

Good crowd up from Cork for once…. Does it just take a league title win to convince the langers that their team is worth following away? ;-)

I don’t think there was ever any question of it getting remotely close to be called off. For once there could be no complaints about the pitch which played better than a grass one would. Yeh, the ball held up a touch when the snow stuck on the pitch, but no more so than playing on a grass pitch in heavy rain, e.g. TC last season. Visibility wasn’t great when it was snowing heavily but you could see the length of the pitch

It certainly took a league title to remind the Dundalk public that Dundalk FC were worth following at home ;)

Just on the first half yesterday - and I'm not quibbling about Dundalk having the best of it - but it's worth bearing in mind that City were facing into a driving blizzard, Dundalk had it to their backs. A yellow or orange ball might have helped! Further, some of the players had the whole Miller situation in their heads.
On the evidence from the season's opener, the four league meetings between the two are going to be fairly tasty.

Cork seem keen not to be seen as a one man band this season judging by the outcome. Hard to read too much into the result as it's not taken that seriously, but you'd imagine a few words will be said in training this week amongst the Dundalk staff and players about how the match played out.

Seriously though, Dundallk fans are probably even more ****ed off than away fans with the state of Oriel at this stage. Sunday really showed it up for the state that it is, two options to get to the shed 1) walk through a big puddle and get wet feet or 2) up the mucky hill to avoid it!
