The owner said he came in and cleared the debt. If he was going to do that and had ambitions on playing in Europe it wouldn't make sense to dump the old club entirely. Then again I've no idea how trustworthy he is.

The FM Ireland account on Twitter, referred to by outspoken above, is run by the Waterford FC Communications Manager, and said as much himself that it's a new entity.

Ah, well in that case. Depends how they did it I guess - I find it hard to believe there haven't been 'new entities' in this league that got into Europe before.

Derry were denied a place in Europe a few years back under the same rule.

Weren’t Derry banned from European competition because of the breach in rules which led to their relegation.
I’m sure there’s a loophole somewhere, and of course JD won’t let us down :)
We just have to do it on the pitch ourselves anyway, id still be happy with us finishing 5th / 6th. Our squad is thin and our key players at either end are both on short term loans.

No. Derry couldn't participate because of it being a new entity. We would have been the same if we were any good at that point!

Its actually a great point that Outspoken raised previously. Waterford never went bust. Wasn't the reason they changed their name was cos their crowds had reduced to 230 fans the season before last and Lee Power was aware when Waterford FC had their glory era in the 70s it was under Waterford FC and reckoned it would be better to change back to their old name.
I think this rule that barred Derry a few years back is very harsh as we all know its the same club. Is there a time bar on this type on stuff?

What do you mean by time bar? The rule is basically you need 3 years of accounts before you're eligible kind of thing. If Waterford just changed their name, without winding up the holding company, there shouldn't be an issue.

FORMER Communications manager, Nigel ;) and not the first time he was wrong :D
Yeah we've been told (and I'm wary that I'm completely jinxing it just by mentioning it) that IF we were to qualify for Europe, there's no issue with us playing in it. As other posters have said, I think it's to do with the holding company not being wound up.
Nah Nah Nah Nah

Europe would be a dream....we've been waiting 32 years for it! But even if we fall away a bit, the people predicting us to finish bottom already look a bit naive.
Can't say I saw anyone predicting that

There's a couple of the predicted final tables on the first few pages of this thread that have us finishing bottom.

Spot on. I'd guess that Vigorous (sic) and Duffus will be on their way in June, and then we're one or two injuries or suspensions away from problems, particularly if either first choice centreback is out medium or long term. Would bite yer hand off for 5th right now.

I went for 6th for Waterford, but they look to be a much better side that Pats who I have in at 5th, like anything its hard to predict at the start.
I would think they should be well capable of holding on to a top 4 spot based on what I've seen to date, especially that performance in Oriel Park, but as per above comments, any key movement out of players and/or injuries and the back up might look to be little limited. This is where the squad of both Dundalk and Cork will probably see both push ahead more, but to be fair Waterford have fairly stuck with it, and if they get a good result tonight, the dream continues...............

Always nice to bump this at the end of the season to see just how badly wrong my predictions have been.

Premier:
1. (1.55) Dundalk

4. (4.45) St Pats
5. (4.58) Derry
6. (6.88) Waterford
7. (7.00) Sligo
8. (7.06) Bohemians
9. (9.09) Limerick
10. (9.55) Bray
First:
1. (2.07) Galway
2. (2.13) Harps

7. (5.97) UCD
8. (6.55) Cabinteely

This makes for interesting reading in hindsight. The Premier table is impressively accurate.. The wisdom of crowds, I guess. And what would crowds know about UCD....
