Went a little unnoticed this weekend, Gallagher was selected by Atlanta United in the MLS SuperDraft on Friday night: https://www.atlutd.com/post/2018/01/19/atlanta-united-selects-jon-gallagher-oliver-shannon-gordon-wild-mls-superdraft
Short interview with him following his selection: https://www.atlutd.com/post/2018/01/19/dream-come-true-atl-utd-selects-gallagher-no-14-overall-mls-superdraft?autoplay=true

What am I missing there? They state he's from Dundalk and is Irish but that he's played for England schoolboys?

Tried watching the interview but he's developed such an American twang, I cant decipher if the underlying accent is English or Irish.
EDIT: He went to boarding school in England at the age of 15 to further his footballing ambitions https://m.independent.ie/regionals/argus/sport/soccer/blackrock-striker-set-for-big-breakthrough-in-mls-36452304.html

Sorry for multiple posts but doing a bit more reading on this. Atlanta have a lot of potential for Gallagher. Chris McCann is already at the club and they have Irish-American Michael Parkhurst too. Gerardo Martino is the manager- former manager of Barcelona and Argentina. Brad Guzan is there, as well as current Chile, Paraguay, Venezuela and Jamaica internationals and they splashed out big bucks on an 18 year old prospect from Argentina who was attracting lots of attention from Europe.
All that said, it might be a tough side for Jon to break into!

Just to compare to Atlanta's picks from the 2017 MLS SuperDraft (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_MLS_SuperDraft), they selected Miles Robinson, Julian Gressel, Andrew Wheeler-Omiunu, and Alex Kapp.
Robinson's spent most of his time on loan at Charleston Battery in the USL, Gressel played 35 times for Atlanta last season and scored six goals, Wheeler-Omiunu only appearad once and they decided not to sign Kapp - he ended up at Minnesota.
So, while it's good news that Gallagher was selected, it's no indication of success.

Gallagher named in the bench for Atlanta tonight against Colorado, think that's the first time he's been involved with the first team

I've said it many times before, and Ole's post bears it out, America's MLS is a more than a suitable destination for young Irish prospects at a time when we keep looking for alternatives to the graveyard of Irish dreams, which is English football.

Jon Gallagher was man of the match on his debut for Aberdeen in the Europa League tonight.
Not a player I know a huge amount about but getting rave reviews from the Aberdeen fans this evening.

LiveScore have him down as playing midfield. That's great to hear. You wouldn't know the standard he was playing at over there, nor that of RoPS but still positive.

Two assists and his first goal at senior level tonight for Gallagher
for aberdeen? i see he started in the europa league game but no mention of a goal or assist that i can see...
edit: ok the bbc credit him with a couple of assists and describe his performance as excellent. he didn't score himself though it seems.

Seems the second goal, from Cosgrave, was attributed to Gallagher then changed to Cosgrave

Came off the bench for his first appearance for Atlanta last night in the MLS Is Back Tournament.
Unfortunately, Atlanta have lost all three of their group games 1-0, and have been knocked out

this guy is a serious talent. Are we gonna have a Hoolahan scenario part II? Last year he was a sensation at Aberdeen.
we have to get players from everywhere not only Championship, which I think is not a good market its tough and a lot of pressure to go up, promoted to premier league the old englishn1st division.
i prefer a guy who plays in a 1st division of a quality league rather than england's B division / championship.
If this fellow Cullen goes to Anderlecht big move then

Was he a sensation? A couple of Aberdeen fans forums I checked out were fairly lukewarm on him overall.
Lovely goals though.

I think 'sensation' might be slightly overselling it. He wasn't always a regular and seemed to be used as something of a utility player, filling gaps.
What is his best position, then? Seemed to be playing on the left wing against DC.

I dunno. I put DMF in the title as wikipedia says he can play all three.

Was a striker. Moved to right back. Played a bit in midfield. Seems to be a utility man anywhere on the right but he's coming in off the left there for Atlanta. Interesting.

Started in the bench this evening, came on as a substitute, then equalises on 88 minutes.
And Atlanta's stadium turns into a rave

Gallagher has been traded to Austin FC, a new team that will have its first MLS season in 2021. Probably good for his career in that he will hopefully get more game time. Atlanta is not the ideal place for a player trying to establish himself as they have a lot of depth.

According to Wiki Austin only have six players on their books, so one would certainly hope so!
Didn't realise until recently but apparently he played for England schoolboys.

Schoolboys different than international though, no? My understanding is that you play for the schoolboy team where you live, regardless of international allegiance. Giggs played (captained?) for England schoolboys for example if memory serves, though he had no intention of representing them internationally.
Worth noting he has the Irish flag in his Twitter bio. By the time the MLS season starts in March Austin should have approximately 30 players.

Ah yeah, there are lads over on YBIG casting doubt on his desire to play for Ireland as a result of that and some other wild speculation. That place is tough reading. I find it has a bit more traffic than here so there's a little more news and discussion but it doesn't take more than one or two scrolls for me to want to throw my phone off the wall.

Of anyone in our potential player pool Gallagher is a true citizen of the world given his family moved around a lot. Bottom line, he has an Irish flag in his Twitter profile, was born in the country, and I have no doubt he’d love to line up for us if given the opportunity. And while he might seem an outside chance of making it to a higher level/full international status, I have to say I’ve liked what I’ve seen so far.

Exactly. He and his family moved around a lot when he was growing up and he went to boarding school in England for a while. I believe he also spent time in the US, Singapore and the Caribbean. Seems to have led an interesting life.
I don't believe there's any grounds to doubt his allegiance.

Ok i will!
The problem of Irish football can be summed up today and now, in this precise and vital moment, ... we can only say this irony in one surname: Gallagher.
While some of you have a young and talented guy like native Jon playing at a good level, this guy showed he's a versatile and ambidextrous young footballer, and waiting to be added to the national team, some of the Irish fans ask and also beg in a popular clamour for an English kid named Gallagher, who has just played a handful of matches, with the luck that he was loaned to a club where this english Gallagher can show himself. That tells you, with a wink, that the owners of the suit are developing this child and he wont play for the Republic.
So let's stop chasing shadows and prepare the native Irish for the national team, because Irish football can no longer depend on the English first division. Sarcastically, as the English writer Eric Howsbawm wrote about his theory of globalization in this "end of nationalisms" time, this social theory has deteriorated the commitment of the new 2nd and 3rd generation of "Irish" footballers.

Came on today in the 66th minute and immediately set up the winner. I went back and watched the portion of the match he played last week and Tets is right, he did well enough. This guy is worth watching and could wind up playing for us given our poor attacking options. Someone might consider updating the thread title to reflect his current club.
