Ronan Hale has signed on loan to Derry City until June. He's still only 19 so it's a good level for him to be getting a loan at, once he's afforded first team opportunities. His older brother Rory is there too, after he impressed for Galway United last season before their relegation.

I've said elsewhere that I believe that we seem to be very close to having a wave of top striking talent coming through and this does give me pause for thought, somewhat. Hale is the first of a group of strikers with excellent U18 scoring records - with 26 goals in 21 games, I think, his was particularly good and I guess I was hoping that was an indication that promotion to the Birmingham first team was imminent. However he seems to have found the step-up to U23 level a bit challenging and this move seems to indicate that he's not as close to a major breakthrough as some had hoped. That said, as you said, if he can get regular game time at Derry, it would give him an opportunity to get his career moving fast again by scoring a few goals at senior level. And with it being close to home and with his brother also there, it will hopefully be a comfortable environment in which to step up a level. So I do hope he does well (although not too well, as I am a Cork City fan;))

In other transfer news, Burnley have sent former Man U academy defender Jimmy Dunne on loan to Accrington Stanley ("Accrington Stanley? Who're they?" "Exactly"). Apparently, he was on loan at Barrow for the first half of the season and scored a couple of goals for them: http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/42567010

Gavin Gunning has signed an 18-month deal with Forest Green:http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/42571426

And here's an interesting one: Teenage Waterford United striker Aaron Drinan has signed a three-and-a-half year deal with Ipswich and may feature in this Saturday's cup game, receiving praise from Mick McCarthy: https://www.itfc.co.uk/news/2018/january/aaron-drinan-joins-town/

Corey Whelan signed a new contract with Liverpool a few weeks ago. He's now signed on loan with Yeovil until season's end.

Yeovil are presently 3 places above the relegation sports in League 2 and he'll find fellow Irishman Connor Smith there.

Played 11 games for Bohs senior side last year too.

I wouldn't call it the biggest move of the off-season either. McEleney, Sule, McMillan all gone into first team squads. O'Hora is going into Brighton under-23 squad.

So Dylan Watts is being released by Leicester, which means his loan spell at Bohs ends as well. Will be a loss for Bohs, unless they manage to sign him.

No major shocks there, I guess - of that group, Dessie Hutchinson looked closest to a breakthrough but even he would have been behind other Irish players at his club. We knew that Damien Delaney was moving to Cork City anyway - hopefully might be opportunities for LOI managers with a good eye for a bargain to develop a few of these lads

new contracts for Aaron O'Driscoll and Jonathan Afolabi at Southampton: https://southamptonfc.com/news/2018-06-29/video-academy-youngsters-new-southampton-professional-contracts

Two years for O'Driscoll and one for Afolabi - would it be a reasonable analysis to believe that Southampton have definite plans for O'Driscoll but Afolabi has one year to prove himself? Or is that reading too much into it?

A few words here with Afolabi.

Also interesting to note that O'Driscoll is 19 so the contract takes him up to 21. Afolabi is 18 so it takes him to 19.

Good news, but not entirely unexpected, given his excellent form last season - hopefully he can start netting for the U23s this season. Also worth noting another Irish recruit at Norwich on that list, with Josh Giurgi being given a scholarship

Great move for him at such a young age. Exeter got to the L2 play-offs last season. They appreciate a defender with an eye for goal too, as Pierce Sweeney managed 8 in the league last season.

Ah. 12 league games in League One isn't so bad for a lad who had his 19th birthday half way through the season.
