So what you're saying we have lads coming through?

Some serious talents coming through in a few of our underage teams. Obviously,a lot will fall by the wayside and it might be the unheralded one that becomes a Seamus Coleman.

I'm confident for our future. Last year St Kevin's u13s beat Barcelona in Dublin and their coach said what a good team kevin's are. Those lads wouldn't be on the international scene yet so it bodes well that this might be a sign of good things to come rather than one or two good batches.

Have to admit i have only seen him once but parrott is meant to be really special.

Really hope okoflex who has already played for Arsenal under 18s a few times at 15 doesn't end up staying with the Brit's. Still an under 16 like parrot hoped he would be in this squad. Be awful to see a lad born in Ireland and live here till 11 or 12 play for the Brit's.

not a very sexy one but for me kelleher the Liverpool keeper who was under 19s keeper last year is the best keeper I have seen underage since given I think. Great with his feet really assured and good shot stopper. I see a fair bit of him on Liverpool TV cause I'm a pool fan. Problem for him is gabara the polish keeper who is a few months younger is also a savage keeper so they share the 23s and friendlies. Be great if he got to go on loan. Outfield I suppose Lee o Connor at Utd looks like our future right full. Didn't get to Waterford this week unfortunately but wood have been real interesting seeing him play in advanced right midfield. I think he was injured in the euros last may and we didn't see him at his best. Was surprised as well that idah didn't end up at a much bigger club than Norwich he was unreal quality in that victory shield tournament last year and even in the euros playing a year up looked quality. Still ever since Richie partridge and mcphail didn't really make it after looking outrageous everytime I saw them underage I've given up hoping these come through! You'd have to hope that Ronan at wolves will be an important creative player for us and we will have been very glad to have robbed him from the brits

I can't remember what it's like to lose! That's in Bulgaria as well so a really good scoreline, not that it's too hostile over there I'd imagine. :)

I saw on the FAI Facebook page the stats on what has been "an incredible 22 days for Ireland's senior & underage teams in competitive qualifying matches":

Played 12

Won 10

Drawn 2

Lost 0

Scored 27

Conceded 1

Finished 3-0, Idah with the third. Ukraine thumped Azerbaijan 6-1 in the other game, so Ireland top the group due to not conceding in the qualifiers yet. Final group positions to be decided in the final game on Monday against Ukraine

Just went back over Idah's record for the U-17s - I think he made his debut in a friendly against Slovenia in August 2016 - since then, by my count, he's scored 16 times, including 10 competitive goals! That's pretty phenomenal. Anyone know if that's a record for this age group? Or any underage group?

Idah is a bloody goal-machine.

it will be an interesting likely totally irrelevant comparison case study to see how 2 of our most talented goalscorers underage Of The last 20 yrs fare over the next 5 years one mccauley at a massive club with crazy resources playing with the best young talent and been coached by Gerard and the other idah at a small club like Norwich With limited resources. Hopefully both go on to play top flight football despite being at such different UK clubs

Definiteky. McAuley has a lot of ground to make up on the international front anyway.

The 42 are reporting that Idah is of Nigerian and Irish descent. What's his background exactly, do you know?

Olé Olé
16/10/2017, 10:12 PM
I've done a bit of digging. His mother's name is Fiona so I assume his Nigerian heritage is on his father's side. Hopefully we are fairly safe.

Idah is a bloody goal-machine.

By my count, that's eighteen goals for the U-17s for Idah since he started playing for them in August of last year

And don't forget Aaran Connolly, who scored seven in last year's U-17 campaign who's already playing for Brighton's U-23s (played 30 mins tonight) and got some First-team minutes in the Carabao Cup earlier this season.

Not bad, nothing to fear there, especially with seven of the eight second-placed teams also qualifying - let's hope top-scorer Idah can keep his phenomenal run going and/or Troy Parrott breaks through, after two sub appearances in the qualifying round

Article here on Idah recently:

Ireland, here is the heir of Robbie Keane: Idah has also bewitched Mourinho
LIKE TO MOURINHO- A striker of Nigerian origins grew up in the Corinthians College of Cork, his hometown, Idah is a player of great physical skills combined with an excellent basic technique and a moderate speed in tight spaces . These skills convinced the Canaries to engage him after a test match in which he signed a triplet to Peterborough; a vice that with multiple markings, as shown by the 3 goals scored also at Barnsley in an FA Youth Cup match at Carrow Road under the eyes of the first team technician Daniel Farke, who is keeping him under observation. Exactly like the Manchester United of José Mourinho, who in June will lose Zlatan Ibrahimovic and who has seen in Idah a player of sure future .

Very sprculatory isn't it with the United links? The "Nigerian origin" piece may be lost in translation as, I'm almost certain, his mother is Irish.

Great start for the U-17s - let's hope they can get a similar result against Georgia to secure qualification before facing Poland. One concern, though - Troy Parrott came on as a sub after 52 mins and was taken off on 74 mins, which is never a good thing - let's hope it isn't a serious injury

Great win today 2-0, Parrot(possible og) and Brennan. FAI twitter saying they've qualified, assumably because it looks like Macedonia beat Poland 1-0, however, some places are reporting Poland 3-0. On mobile so maybe 2 Teams go through.

Forget all that, too much sauce today.

Yeah, all second-placed teams go through except the one with the worst record against first and third in its group. In a tight Group 2, Belgium came second, picking up only a point against first and third in their group. As we have already picked up three points against both Macedonia and Georgia, we are guaranteed to beat that record, even if Poland beat us and overtake us for first place. It isn't as daunting a task as for the U-19s, who must top their group to get through, but still an impressive achievement to have done it so comfortably so congratulations to all involved. So our U-17s have made it to their final tournament for the second year in a row and will be playing in their third in a row next year at home. That is definitely starting to auger well for the future.
