Derry City Football Club has been stunned with the news of the tragic death of team captain, Ryan McBride. The 27-years-old centre-back, who resides in the shadow of Brandywell Stadium, is understood to have been found dead in his bedroom earlier this evening. The cause of death is not known. Crowds of supporters gathered outside his home at Bluebell Hill Gardens last night, in total shock, Ryan having led the Candy Stripes to victory for the fourth time this season against Drogheda United, just 24 hours earlier.

Devasting. Can't really put it into words.

I'll quote Ryan:
"Other footballers have dreams of going across the water and playing for Man United and Celtic but my dream as a boy was to play for Derry City and that came true." (http://www.derryjournal.com/sport/football/derry-city/derry-city-city-captaincy-a-dream-come-true-for-ryan-mcbride-1-6532907)

This is so hard. I lifted his neighbour (I'm a taxi driver) and heard one side of a conversation? I eventually asked who it was and heard the name and was absolutely shocked. I dropped them off at his house with two ambulances and realised the nightmare from hell just happened. **** me (delete if you's need to admins) but to see so many people crying and what was happening is a nightmare. We went mental in Buncrana last Monday and then Ryan had a flawless performance yesterday with a clean sheet. R.I.P. Ryan. #DCFC5

Terribly tragic to lose Ryan so unexpectedly.

I loved watching him play. Got to see him in the flesh at Tallaght a few weeks ago where he scored the winner and was an absolute pillar at the back when Derry were down to 10 and they were under seige. A real tough CB!!

Deepest condolences to everyone at Derry City.

I only heard the sad loss of Ryan when my brother in law said it to me that a league of Ireland footballer has died.I had to check extra time just in case.I am stunned beyond belief by what happened. May he rest in peace and the fai have done the right thing in calling off all matches even if it is an inconvenience if you had planned to go to a match.

Lovely to see a £1,000 donation from Shane Duffy there. A lot of current and former LOI players among the names listed too.

Indeed. Fair play to Shane. A very considerate and charitable gesture.
