Richard Dunne won it at 24/25 IIRC

Richard Dunne won it in 2000, having just turned 21 a month earlier.

Niall Quinn aged 24, Terry Phelan aged 25, Jeff Kenna aged 25, Darren O'Dea aged 24, Robbie Brady aged 24 are oldest players to have won it since 1990.

I think it's a bit silly really that a 25 year old is still considered a young player.

It'd be a bit silly considering they youngest player in our squad is O'Dowda and after that they're all 24-25. Probably more of a reflection of where we are as a nation that our young players aren't coming through until they're in their mid twenties.

Does Alan Browne not count as an Under 21 International?

Or Darragh Lenihan?

Surely they would be more deserving than Charsley, or even Cullen or O'Dowda.

IDK about Lenihan but Browne is still eligible for them.

I assume Lenihan was as of 6-12 months ago.

I remember Mata playing for Spain U-21's when he was around 24 and Lenihan has only just turned 23.

"it wouldn't be you if you didn't put pressure on" says MON to a fairly innocent question from Tony O'Donoghue. He didn't crack anything close to a smile all interview.

It must be the most pointless and tedious beef in Irish soccer history and, unless Tony being a proper pr*ick behind the scenes, it looks to be all MON'S issue.

Also, very interesting from Robbie that he's back next season for at least a season more. Will be intriguing to see what he does but he'll be after a long time out of the game by then.

What was the questioned that he bristled about ? Tony O'Donoghue had a similar relationship with Trap and even with Noel King during his short reign. His questions can be a bit ott on occasions.

I think O'Neill sees Tony O'Donoghue as a puppet for the likes of Eamon Dunphy, who has relentlessly berated and ridiculed every Irish manager for a generation. It's like he wants to get his retaliation in first, maybe to make TOD less sure of himself and more nervous about asking the 'big' questions (90% of which tend to be about Wes Hoolahan). Being questioned in victory as well as defeat is probably not something he's willing to entertain either, rightly or wrongly.
