Might as well just have a thread covering the season instead of individual matches...

Things didn't look great at Shels but gave players the benefit of the doubt as it was the 1st game. Cobh at home tonight though was a new low. Possibly the worst performance I've ever seen by a Town team. Say what ye like about Cousins, but never did we see a performance that bad (especially in the First Division) when he was in charge.

The players don't look like they give a damn. Mathews brings nothing. Athlone's Portugese management must be relishing the derby match now after what they saw tonight.

Mathews should be sacked now while there's still something to play for. He's an absolute joker. I said it ever since he was linked with getting the job for a second time and I'll continue to say it until he leaves again.

We've had some bad days no doubt, but it's not the worst - it's ****ing bad enough though.
Regardless, I was disgusted with that horrendous performance. The lack of urgency, commitment and care was evident through most of the players this evening. Walsh was a complete liability at the back. He slowed the play, and the switch from one side to another had to go through each player along the back. For their second goal, they were caught in the same format for the second time in two minutes and we were punished. And Curran? How the **** did he miss that wide open goal? We had all the ball but did stone nothing with it, and then it was pumped forward again and again, and we didn't have the ability take the ball and hurt them.

That was horrific. I usually try and find some positives but there was very little out there that would give you any encouragement. A poor crowd, poor atmosphere, the whole place felt really flat even before the game. No sense of optimism or a new beginning after last year. I'm quite concerned on several levels. It looked an unhappy bunch of players already to be honest.

Shocking, I was with a few lads that haven't gone to a Town game in ages and they won't be coming back in a hurry. I was very critical of Matthews last night, some very poor performances.

yeah why dont you get your pal Cousins in so why dont you? Mathews is barely in the door I would give him the benefit of the doubt for now. I didnt believe us being joint favourites from what I have seen in preseason. It always takes us ages getting out of the first division.

I think a lot of people have been on Mathews back since the minute he walked back in the door, the same people wouldn't criticise that joker cousins when it was clear he needed to go. However, if we see more performances like last night then people are 100% right to ask for answers and I would be one of those people because last night was simply unacceptable let it be a new team or not. We had zero organisation and as said above players didn't look interested. Mathews signed these players so he will live/die by their performances. Next week will show us if there's any bottle in this squad or if it's 2016 all over again. That's just my 2 cents on it all

What are you on about you header? Why are you bringing Tony Cousins into this? He should have went long before he did actually go, but I don't see how he's my pal. I don't think I'm getting your point here. My guess is you don't actually know what your point is either, you're just trying to have a pop and have ended up looking a bit stupid. The usual for yourself.

Yes Mathews is barely in the door but he should never have been let in the door in the first place. He's done next to nothing of note since leaving us the first time around. His teams almost always play an horrendous style of "football". If you actually went to the game last night you would have seen the most disjointed performance I think I've ever seen from a team that actually has a decent amount of talent in it. No cohesion, no leadership, no game plan, lack of effort, I could go on. As I said above, if we want to achieve anything out of this season (and we have the players to at least challenge at the top of the division) then he needs to get the bullet ASAP. It won't happen though and this season can already be considered a write off imo.

Agree with De Town that Mathews should never have got the job, but we all knew it would happen as our boards motto is take the easy way out. I like alan and would love him to succeed but realistically if waterford are running away there's no point in sacking him until the end of the season. Also if we are cut adrift after 15 games or so I'd have no issue with releasing all our earners and fielding a team of locals, crowd will be gone to pot so why pay players? Anyway that's all worse case scenario talk, our season starts Friday

ah you are such a hypocrite De Town. I have not forgiven you for what you said about me here on this forum when TC went and I said to him near the tunnel in Wexford that he had to go but no you said I am not the full shilling and made fun of me when other league of ireland fans jumped on my back. I kept quiet for so long about this but enough is enough.

And I have a job to work at nights so I have to prioritise what matches I go to. You think you are smug and arrogant but sadly this will rebound on you some day. I am so angry at what you did here last August. So dont you dare question my support for the first time in a decade I bought a season ticket.

You know why Alan Matthews is not doing as well those so called fans have destroyed our club. I enjoy going to away matches more than home matches. You know why? There's no atmosphere in city calling any more no chanting no flags. Pure silence. At least at away matches there are lads that attempt to make an atmosphere but instead are shouted down . Longford town will never be the same club again.does anyone give a damn anymore? There used to be a buzz going to games but not any more. I didn't find many town fans sticking up for me after the slanderous comment de town said about me last august. In times like this you find out who your true friends are. He made it public in the first place why is nothing said to him? A part of me has died and will never recover again. Yeah we won't go up this year that's for the above reasons. If there was such a thing as a criminal offence de town and his comrades and the club are responsible for destroying an institution like section o was for fifteen long years. Its a sad day when the majority of people are so indifferent about the whole situation. Section o was behind Alan Matthews fully in his first spell it definitely won't happen now. I am never so ashamed to be a town fan right now. And for the likes of de town who thinks hes a know it all I have your cards marked and will make your life hell as you are the chief culprit.I don't like the way you are patronising on other forums on foot.

So yeah bin the thread but I had to get a few things off my chest first.some people may laugh at me but I am concerned about the direction of the club. I don't feel a part of things any more.I don't like the direction that the supporters club is going is they don't run buses, they don't question the club at all now they run lads that did care out of the club and they don't go to matches any more.where is the justice in that? The club haven't an agm since 2011. So to be honest the club will be stuck in the wilderness for years to come and we can only blame ourselves.

Sully is back .that is his fourth hattrick with us. 8.3.13 v salthill away, 5.6.13 v pike rovers fai cup home, 23.7.14 v cobh away. Athlone were shocking bad. No strike outside ground. Cracking atmosphere from jolly boys at it but nothing sang by the yes men. I wonder why?
. Now if there can be a decent home atmosphere. I don't know what the big panic was with calls for Mathews head last week.I rather him than cousins and was strongly emphasised at match.
We are back and that is a huge confidence booster.

Delighted with tonight's win but last week was dire Marty, no getting away from it. Maybe we'll pick up from here but I don't blame anyone for being angry last week. As I said at the time I normally always try to see the positives but last week there were literally none.

WOW athlone are dire. And having seen the CABO result tonight you'd wonder just how bad Wexford are. We can't afford to lose any more games from here on in, waterford look like they have the squad to be consistent so we have to match them. As longfordian sad above people had a genuine right to he angry over the Cobh performance where it looked like the players didn't care but I'm delighted for Alan, he promised us they'd work hard to fix things during the week and the new formation with just Sully up top and no Curran clearly worked a treat. Now if everyone can get behind the team and the manager there's no reason we can't have a great season.

Great win last night. After last weeks disappointing result, it was great to pick up the 3 points and a clean sheet.

Sully's first goal in particular was a great move and finish.

Thought Kelly looked very good at times, he has a great left foot. He picked up a knock, hopefully it's nothing serious.

Hopefully we can follow it up with a positive result next week.

Onwards and upwards!

Good win and much better performance but important to remember how rubbish Athlone are. In saying that they missed a couple of sitters we gifted to them by overplaying at the back which was not on on a pitch like that. Jake Kelly's inclusion was key to us and hopefully his injury is only a minor thing. Boyne playing in the 10 role suited him much more than the right wing where he was last week. Lovely assist for Davy's first goal too.

Agree with the above comments, won't be getting carried away, athlone are woeful but it seems we might be saying that quite a bit this season about opposition teams with Wexford, athlone, shels etc looking woeful so far and I didn't think Cobh were any good either we just made it easy for them. Never thought I'd be nervous for a home game against Cabinteely 🙈 Must win.

just back from Firhouse Clover match. They only had one chance and took it well. We created more chances once Sully came on and how Mulhall didnt score I never know. ex town players Ian Molloy and Benroughbi played for Firhouse.

Firhouse lease their ground from Tallaght IT and from there you can see the floodlights of Tallaght Stadium. They were very agressive in 2nd half.
By the way I bumped into Enda Currans dad and had a great chat with him before the game. He comes from good footballing stock as his elder brother Nicky whos 13-14 years older than him played with Galway Utd in the 90s. Hes from Salthill and Stephen Walsh is from Mervue.Any of the Galway Utd fans remember Nicky play?

Endas father told me that Enda turned down a fulltime offer from Sligo Rovers to come to us which is hugely significant. He was offered accomodation in Riverstown but that fell through and Sligo wouldnt allow Enda to keep his partime job.

But we did and both he and Stephen travel together to Leixlip twice a week for training. I would give Enda and Stephen a chance considering their pedigree and their previous form. Enda didnt play today as he had to do a medical checkup before the game resulting from the knock he got Friday night.

Agree. And his half time 'warm up' in Athlone on Friday didn't amount to much either. He spent the entire 15 mins talking to people on the sidelines whilst the other subs at least did a few drills. Attitude could be better

Didn't spot that. Our half time warm ups have always been comical to be fair. Use to love when the keeper would take shots while one of the forwards would jump out of the way of the ball.

Don't know where all these great chances came from. Their manager said they missed about 10 chances in his post match. Don't think skinner had a save to make. We weren't that good and won 3-0. Says it all.

I am not going to bother going to home matches this year if thats the case the way we are playing at present. I will be at Shels match but much prefer away games more. Its going to be a long depressing season ahead for us Im afraid. Think it will be Cobhs year finally.
