we had a very long and interesting thread here last year about the pro's & cons of the idea of electronic voting(the thread actually spawned the famous "horses ass" avatar for a contributor here :D ).

on a separate but connected issue :this week a report came to light that a dublin returning officer was charged with the job of finding storage space for these great "white elephants" in the greater dublin area and alledgedly reported back saying that he could'nt find anywhere to put the machines.

so himself & his partner accquired some industrial units themselves and are now storing the machines themselves and are charging the government/you/me for the task.

while strictly speaking he has probably done nothing illegal i think that this arrangement looks a bit cosy and i think the job should have been put out to
tender (if it was i did'nt see it).

maybe i'm being too suspicious but it just does'nt feel right to me. :(

ps:btw i am not a member of any political party and am not really impressed by any of the parties out there.

Here's an article from De Paper on the subject.

E-voting storage costs to be investigated (http://www.irishexaminer.com/pport/web/ireland/Full_Story/did-sgPWjL1CWIOg6.asp)
By Mary Dundon, Political Reporter
ENVIRONMENT Minister Dick Roche is to investigate the “inexplicable” difference in the cost of storing e-voting machines.

Also to be investigated is how some State-appointed officials who oversee elections are getting up to €65,000 a year to store the machines.

The State is paying hugely different annual rates for storing the machines, ranging from nothing in Sligo to an average of €1.65 per machine in Louth to €271 in Waterford.

Some returning officers who oversee elections have privately bought premises to store the machines. One of them, Dublin City chief returning officer Brendan Walsh, is getting €65,000 a year to do so.

Mr Roche has asked officials in his department and the Finance Department to examine the difference in costs.

[...]I seem to remember an article in yesterday's paper too, detailing how storage cost twice as much in Martin "Lying Dumbass" Cullen's home county of Waterford, for some reason.

There seems to be a lot of public money going into Waterford based 'projects'. Wonder if Martin Cullen/Monica Leech have their fingers in this as well.
