Has there been any word if this will be televised or even streamed by the FAI like last season?
I can't make it down for the game so looking for some coverage. I presume the trackchamp camera will be on for it but the quality of that is poor enough.

So Anthony Buttimer is refereeing the game tomorrow. It should be a good clean contest refereed to a high standard. I have great memories of him refereeing our games.

Someone posted this on the City forum:

Emailed the FAI and they said it won't be streamed live but will have video updates during the game. I'd imagine like they did with with u19 European games.

We don't forgive and we don't forget.

This is a ludicrous appointment that neither team will be happy about, but appointing a Cork referee who has such significant history with Dundalk is extremely foolish

Buttimer seems to have history with most clubs tbh.

Probably a good thing that he's not officiating a game between us of any real importance. Although there was a few flashpoints in this fixture last year.

Id say it will be 2 strong teams, like last year.

Cant see many travelling, considering we play you down there in a few weeks in the league.
I know my own bus, we were lucky to get 12 were we would usually have 20/25.

I know a few other buses not running

What's changed in Cork? It meant the world last season!

El-Pietro

I don't think it meant the world to many, if any City fans. The celebrations were very subdued for example. I think beating Dundalk meant more than winning the trophy. But now we've shown we can compete with Dundalk over 90 minutes, (winning 3 of the 5 games in 90 minutes last season and the cup final in 120 minutes) so we have less to prove.

Its still a trophy though and we would prefer to win it than lose it of course. Also every game between Cork City and Dundalk is a big game by its very nature. You know the players on both sides will be up for it. This time around though it doesn't carry as much meaning.
Safe travel to any Dundalk fans making their way down.

Buttimer seems to have history with most clubs tbh.

Of course he has - because he is a totally incompetent referee who is a narcissistic egomaniac when he takes to the pitch.

There is a very good reason why he has not refereed a Dundalk match since October 2013:

ONE MAN stood out and dominated on the big stage of an FAI Cup semi-final. Sadly, it was for all the wrong reasons.

It's fair to say that referee Anthony Buttimer will not be getting the freedom of Dundalk town any time soon as three key decisions, all made in the space of less than five minutes and all controversial decisions, effectively denied Dundalk a place in the FAI Cup final and saw Drogheda United progress.

http://www.herald.ie/sport/soccer/referee-red-calls-enrage-dundalk-29640435.html

The reasons why he has been "overlooked" since have not suddenly changed. He should be put out to pastures permanently, but to re-introduce him in this match in Cork is ridiculous and may add an unnecessary edge to the game. Apart from anything else it opens the door to home town bias accusations (although his nonsensical decisions could go against either team)

Is he not retired? I'm sure he retired a few years back? I can't remember the last time he reffed one of our games other than a friendly or in the MSC. Though he may well have reffed a bunch last year and I'm forgetting them.

I thought the same although I may remember him being on 4th official duty last season, could be wrong.

first real big game of the season, 2 of the top teams in the country, you would think one of the channels would cover it. i'd say there will be a big crowd at it to.

The president himself gives a few words on the game (although he'll actually miss it as he's out of the country):

Why isn't this fixture played at a neutral venue and how come Cork are favoured in terms of getting home advantage?

Duggie
17/02/2017, 10:37 AM
thats the problems with having a shortage of decent grounds around the country. Where else could you play it unless its tallaght, possibly galway? i'm presuming there will be a big crowd down in cork and if you did say play it in tallaght or anywhere else i would say the crowd numbers would be small. maybe the crowd numbers come into it. also dundalks pitch would not be ready in time so that option is out.

1800 last year. Maybe less today with the damp weather and Friday night making travel difficult. We'll see.

This isn't a big enough game to justify a neutral ground. We wouldn't send more than a couple of hundred to Dublin for this game. Dundalk might send 1,000 maybe? Maybe. Maybe you get a few neutrals balancing it out.

Duggie
17/02/2017, 11:08 AM
really that small of a crowd. i was presuming there might be 3-4000 at it tonight.

This is the sort of game the FAI should be creating a bit of hype around.

It's the President's Cup - named for a very popular President who's willing to help promote the game/event. And it features the top 2 clubs in the country.

This should be advertised properly using Michael D. If he's on TV telling people how much he loves it and telling people to go along, people will listen. And they should also be getting the Presidents' office to be helping to promote it via Twitter etc.

The FAI just never even think about simple and obvious things like this :(

It's not ideal that the two teams competing in it are from opposite ends of the country.

It is still viewed as a pre-season game, so is only going to attract die-hards. This would be as much a case if it was in Oriel or TX.

I would have gone to Cork if it was on a Saturday or Sunday, but a Friday evening?

agree with that I was thinking of tipping down but I'd have to leave work early and I'm saving those "earlies" for Rovers away matches.
Should be on a Saturday night IMHO

It was planned for the Saturday, we had our AGM scheduled for tonight. The Presidents office indicated that he would only available for tonight... but now hes out of the country anyway so....

I'd be surprised if the attendance exceeded 2k for this one, also agree neutral venue wouldn't work, it has to be toss of a coin. We don't even have neutral venue for cup semi finals, always thought H+A for fai cup semi's (as we had in the mid 80's) would be fairer but that's for another day.

Should be a good match tonight, I'm not going but I`ll be closely following, I think the main use for both sides is a final work out against decent opposition.

I'm trying to think without google checking, but I think the 'away' side has never won the new version of the President's Cup. The trend might continue tonight if Dundalk win as we are effectively the home side:)

Mostly all Dundalk going by the highlights on the FAI twitter, Sava doing his best Chuckle Brothers impression for both Cork goals, legs wider than the Grand Canyon for the first after Barrett made a haimes of a high ball over the top and Sava just chucked a free into his own top corner ffs.

If anyone has their own boots and a sleeve tattoo, then they've a fair chance of getting a game at centre-half for either side. Paddy Barrett was particularly doubleplusungood.

Anyone who watched last nights game will agree with the above.
The mans a clown.
He made sure everyone noticed him.
Fortunately we won't have him in any of our important games this season.

All LOI supporters have my deepest sympathies if you have Buttimer this season.
No team deserves that

What was even worse is that the referees assessor was non other than Cpl Clot himself (Eddie Foley) the lino of World Cup fame.
Can it get any worse ?
