PEACE PROCESS IN CRISIS

The IRA has withdrawn from the disarmament programme in Northern Ireland, plunging the peace process into a new crisis.

In a statement it the Provisionals said the scheme to put all their weapons completely and verifiably beyond use was no longer on the table.


They claimed the British and Irish governments had withdrawn their commitments and obligations.

The IRA has so far carried out three acts of decommissioning.

The statement said: "We do not intend to remain quiescent within this unacceptable and unstable situation.

"It has tried our patience to the limit."

When sport permits organised criminal organisations to mar attempts to cement cross border relations it will be a sad day.
The IRA have become marginalised on both sides of the border at this stage and there can never be a return to the past scenario. There is no longer a cause, just gangsters wishing to continue their lucrative smuggling, drug pushing and protection rackets. :(
Lets be positive and retain the enthusiasm on both sides of the border for this great footballing inititive. :)

According to the Irish Times Linfield have agreed to let a Belfast Camogie team train on their traning pitch ahead of a cup semi final this weekend. Apparently The GAA at Casement Park and Cliftonville wouldn't help them out. A good example of sport not been influenced by politics.

A women's Gaelic team has trained for a crucial cup tie at the home of Northern Ireland's most identifiably Protestant soccer club, it emerged today.

For years Windsor Park in Belfast has been a no-go area for Catholics driven out by sectarian chanting from the terraces.

But the barriers crumbled under sporting goodwill as Linfield FC allowed Camogie players from St Mary's Teacher Training College into Northern Ireland's footballing shrine.

Mr David Jeffrey, the Irish League champions' colourful manager, arranged for pitches to be made available after an SOS call from St Mary's coach Ms Mel Smith.

Ms Smith (50) praised the soccer supremo for rescuing her attempts to prepare properly for this weekend's Purcell Cup semi-final.

She said: "David Jeffrey is a gentleman who worked a miracle for us."

Her students normally practise on gravel pitches close to their base on the Falls Road. But with the critical tie against Queen's University looming, all efforts to find a grass surface for night time training appeared doomed to failure.

Local Gaelic Football clubs were unable to help because of no floodlighting.

As time began to run out, she had a final, apparently futile, idea on Monday.

"David Jeffrey's name came into my head," she recalled. "I don't know anything about soccer, but I'm mad about all sports and read about Linfield always seeming to win.

"My personal feeling was that it would as hard to get Casement Park (Antrim GAA's ground) as Windsor Park so I got hold of David's number, phoned and asked him.

"He listened to me and by the time I was finished he was laughing and said 'No problem, let me make a few arrangements'."

I didn't mean it to sound like I was having a go at either the GAA or Cliftonville. The Times said that Casement park "could not accomodate them". Bad choice of words on my part. I just thought it was a nice gesture from Linfield.

May of escaped everyones attention but a power sharing government was up and running then collapsed because of PIRA spy rings / terrorist crime failing to cease! The whole world can witness prisoner releases and the dismantling of police stations/army barracks and the reduction of troop levels etc .....why cant we witness or even be told of the weapons that are decommissioned....why the big secret!! do the paramilitaries on all sides have less weapons than their members have been lead to believe, are they embarassed about the questions the rank and file would want to ask where all the money was spent and on what over the last 30 plus years

Your link was from 2002. The man in question was released after a few years in custody because of lack of evidence!!!!
People just can't see past this "its all the IRA's fault" attitude .
Fact is everytime Sinn Fein get near power sharing the whole thing folds,I personally can't understand why people can't see what is going on.As with the bugging issue and the bank robbery why don't people contact brittish intellligence personnel ,they could fill you in on a few details!
