I didn't forget that goal because it's imprinted in my mind, but what I'd give for the days an Irish midfielder would have that kind of space to shoot from there in an important competitive game. We were blessed to have players like Keane, Holland and Kinsella who could make things like that happen.

I remember it well cos i was in the bleeding horse, and just before he scored i went to go to the toilet and one of the lads was getting thick with me, for some reason i dont know he was thick for no good reason and started throwing water on me. the dick. I really enjoyed that goal, not that many watching it in the back of the bleeding horse.

I was in the pub for that one too, think it was a Saturday night... the goal was wonderfully out of the blue. I saw Matty in the station in Paris actually while waiting for the train to Bordeaux. Thankfully I was sober so I refrained from plaguing him for a photo and so on.

It was most definitely a Saturday. My cousin actually went to it I think.

We didn't do much really in that game, and it was kind of against the run of play too. I have it in my head as the 75th or 76th minute or possibly even the 77th. But I do remembre it around that time, usually i always seem to add on a couple of minutes through nostalgia when it comes to irelands goal in these important games.

Ara, if they are doing media work at these things they half expect it. Granted there was a lot of Irish in France so its not like a normal away game where usually only a few hundred, and you only get to see a few of those. You will often see Whelan and houghton out and they are more than happy to pose for photos. We had great craic with Eoin hand and George hamilton and I think Gabriel Egan over in bulgaria one time. Hand kept asking us quietly to ask Gabriel Egan for a photo actually, which I thought was very nice.

That seems about right and yeah we were doing nothing at all. It kind of balanced out the Dutch game before it where we were unlucky enough to only draw.

This is possibly a pretty underrated finish from Quinn (https://youtu.be/iQ2qpdhI6BQ?t=2m7s). The first goal from Townsend was nicely worked too.

Can't ever forget Tony Grealish's goal against Cyprus, can't find a link, can anyone else? I am sure he scored from about 75 metres out. It's amazing how your imagination plays tricks!

Did you tell him he wasn't a real supporter for watching it in the pub?

Come on POSH we all know you instigated it!

I was living in Dublin at the time of the Yugoslavia game, not far from Lansdowne Road, but there was no tickets to be had so I watched it in the flat with my flatmates and a friend of ours. He got hammered and ended up staying the night. When he woke up the next morning, he asked me "how drunk was I last night? Did Ireland really score two cracking goals?"

I remember that Portugal game well, watched it in Quinn's in Limerick. Friend of mine had just started a new job as a security guard and had to miss the game, but he walked into the pub still in his work uniform around half time. He told us that the office had let him leave for a bit to watch the second half. Full time came and went and he told us he was ok to stay until last orders, and had drank about two pints at this stage. Last orders came and went, but he told use he was ok to go out, and then he went to a nightclub with us. One of the lads told me a few weeks later he'd heard him in one of the cubicles in Quinn's on his radio back to the office, "no, it's all quiet here, no need to come out". Unsurprisingly, he lost his job a few weeks later.

I really liked Ian Harte's header at home to Denmark and Liam Miller's shot against Sweden. Both friendlies though.

Obviously the brain-foot coordination is going to be a more difficult task for a guy of 6'4, but he had so many really huge moments. Equalisers against the Dutch, at Wembley and against Denmark probably the pick of his goals in terms of importance and you could throw the assists for Robbie against Germany & Spain in Japan into the mix as well.

Thats a brilliant story, tets. I never knew you worked as a Security Guard.

I think Stutts just wanted to throw out obscure ones just to show off how great his memory is, as he hasn't told us enough times before.

Ya but the spain miss in the same group was brutal as that score against Denmark.

Think he was through one on one and tried to put is low to Zubizarreta's left but it went a fraction past the post, the keeper may have even got a touch. It took me a few minutes to remember it too, I think I have the right one anyway.

I'm mystified how that strike could be erased from your memory, as well at it being a crucial goal that game was the seminal one, more so than the Dutch game previous.

It was played in the days when Rte was unobtainable , I had to manually readjust my sat dish towards the Azores in order to tune into a Portugese state channel on Eutelsat. I have it recorded on vhs, I had considered donating it to Worm for his collection but somehow I still have it.

I watched that at some club in Ealing - showed a few of the games. I think it was Setanta coverage & the commentator seemed to be some guy they grabbed off the street - kept getting the players mixed up!

It was right i felt like he had an age and the goal opened up for him but ya thats it. That sticks out in my memory as one of our biggest misses but we were saved in the last game in the end.

Iceland is my home.

Portugal v Ireland was definitely not on BBC satellite platform
Memory is hazy in regards to reasons why but I could only watch Netherlands v Ireland on Eurosport highlights and Portugal V Irl was as mentioned.
I think I could watch the rest of that campaign on sky sports, Estonia away, Giles was the co-commentator.
At least I can remember the effin games and what mattered :)

Kevin Doyle's left foot cracker against Slovakia in 2007. Hands down the best goal I've ever seen, there was just something special about it and I couldn't believe he'd tried to pull it off.

Super strike. That goal was definitely mentioned somewhere recently enough. I remember comparing it to Steven Gerrard's famous goal against Olympiakos. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wN1wgIey2es)

I was behind the goals for that one, as the rest of the Irish fans were I guess. Hard to know how he generated so much power from basically a standing start and facing away from goal. Unbelievable goal really. He has a good swing of his left foot, this one wasn't bad either.

Great thread. I remember Robbie Keane's thunderbolt in a 1-0 friendly win away to Holland. Andy Reid's decoy run and the whole build up was fantastic! In my opinion Robbie's best ever international goal
https://youtu.be/iaPYtRFofdI

Does anyone remember David Connolly V Turkey in a Lansdowne friendly? Took the ball on edge of the box and made a joke of Turkish defender (Alpay?).
Crazy game where the Turkish sub keeper was a lunatic. Think he was subbed off himself then. Richard Dunne got the equaliser in the dying minutes. No link for that I'm afraid

Tee hee! Omer Catcin or something. Got a text from a mate at the other side of the ground during the match that I'd be better than him.

Actually had a decent career I think.

Edit - Omer Catkic (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%96mer_%C3%87atk%C4%B1%C3%A7) it seems.

Nope; the free v South Africa in Thomond.

Not particularly spectacular - he was straight in front of the posts actually. 25m out; would have expected him to score from there. Brave block-down attempt from South Africa initially, but the referee called play back. Gave Lawrence a second go, kicking into a bit of a cross-wind, and in fairness, he struck it cleanly and it went just inside the left post.

Our 100th goal? Amd robbie then went on to score 67 all on his own? Is that not enough for any doubters.

I remembered that goal but couldnt remember who it was against. Sheridan was always shooting from around that area, in my mind at least. Thats what i remember him for.

Delores i was pretty sure he didnt get a touch but it looked like he did on first replay but not second in slow motion ;)
