Monaghan United have been linked with a move for former Sunderland, Bohemians and Shamrock Rovers winger Glenn Lacey, who is bidding to rebuild his career in the game after a ban for the use of recreational drugs last season.

Lacey spent last season at Drogheda United, but despite some promising early displays on the right wing for the Drogs, he was unable to hold down a regular place in Paul Doolin’s side.

His season was virtually ended after testing positive in a random drugs test last August, when traces of cannabis showed up.

Subsequently banned for two months, the 21-year-old failed to play again for Drogheda and is believed to be on the look-out for a new club this winter.

Formerly a regular at under-19 international level under Brian Kerr, Lacey is regarded as having untapped potential and, after disappointing spells at two Premier Division clubs, may take his first steps towards forging a career at the top level of Irish soccer by signing on with Monaghan in the coming days.

would be an excellent signing for any 1st div. team
