Can't find a thread for Hayes, which is weird considering he's made his international debut, but he's been nominated for Player of the Season in Scotland: https://twitter.com/PFAScotland/statuses/725315843664535552

Congrats to @celticfc (https://twitter.com/celticfc) Leigh Griffiths, @dundeefconline (https://twitter.com/dundeefconline) Kane Hemmings & Greg Stewart; @AberdeenFC (https://twitter.com/AberdeenFC) Jonny Hayes on nominations for PoY.

I always suspected the Welsh were a bit tight-fisted and this has done nothing to change my perception.

The better question is whether Paul O'Shea suspected it first.

Rooney and Anthony O'Connor both on the scoresheet for Aberdeen this afternoon. Hayes assisted the latters goal with a free kick and was the star of the show again according to a few accounts.

I wonder if Anthony O'Connor might be worth taking a look at at some stage too. Only 24 and has done well wherever he has gone. Doesn't have his own thread though so...until then...probably not.

I believe Martin O Neil mentioned something at the last press conference about only looking at players with their own threads and at least one argument about their commitment to the cause.

He did - but only when pushed on the question by Tony O'Donoghue.

GOAL Aberdeen 1-3 Celtic (Hayes)

Och, this is ridiculous! Jonny Hayes reminds us why he was nominated by his fellow professionals as a potential player of the year. The little Irishman curls in a heavenly sweet shot that has Craig Gordon flapping about like a seagull near a chip shop. What a goal! What a crazy start to a football game!

Really good goal alright. I've not paid Hayes enough attention, but he seems to be one of Aberdeen's star performers this season and I thought he was one of the few players who actually stood out for us against Iceland.

Into double figures for the season, 9 in the league and 1 in other competitions.

Have been impressed with the way he stepped up to Intl football.

Maybe he will get a big move this summer, though if Aberdeen get a bye in to the group stages of European competition he may stay in any regard.

Has just given Aberdeen an early lead against Celtic in the Scottish Cup Final. Good take from a corner which Celtic seemed to be asleep for.

Armstrong has just equalised straight away for Celtic.

Agreed.

Lovely ball to McLean when the game was level and McLean out-ran the ball. Some chance.

McClean, Brady, Hayes, McGeady...

Some amount of options we have for the wide positions.

Pilkington's not too bad either.

Needs to leave Aberdeen and play against proper players on a regular basis before one can really judge him.

The Sky cameras showed Brendan Rodgers saying more than a few words to Hayes after the match. He's probably a tad old to be a Rodgers signing.

I remember seeing Hayes on the wing for Ireland under 19s in Turners Cross. Randolph in goals. Stokes up front with Billy Clarke. Gibson in midfield. I thought Hayes compared really well to the lads who have gone onto PL level.

Cardiff were in for him most recently. You don't often see players go direct to the PL from SPL unless they're a young prospect. 29 year olds don't tend to get a punt taken on them by PL clubs. It dawned on me that Derek McInnes, the Aberdeen manager, has been heavily linked with the vacant Sunderland job. That's a big club and if he brought Hayes with him it would be the next best thing to a PL move.

Anthony O'Connor came on to try and stifle Tom Rogic. He was badly exposed for pace by Rogic for his match-winning goal I thought.

And Horgan?
But looking forward to June 11, which is only two weeks away now, the critical need is at right back and center forward.
Do you put O'Shea and Duffy at center back and Richard Keogh at right back. Or do you opt for Andy Boyle or Kevin Long?
Center forward. If MON is going with Walters and Murphy then it will tell you right away that it's route one all the way.
That would mean a lot of lost possession and a lot of hopeful long balls.
Would rather see us keep it on the floor via Brady, Hool, McGeady etc.

Two friendlies beforehand all of a sudden become important for developing players at these positions and tactics.

I'd be shocked if O'Neill went with anybody other than Christie at right back.

TheOneWhoKnocks

Mark

Forgot about Horgan. We're stacked in those positions.

I wouldn't play Walters and Murphy up front or even in the same team.

Ideally it would be one of them and Hoolahan.

Though, Hoolahan slipped Walters clean through second half against Austria and he couldn't take advantage, so you have to weigh up whether playing someone like Wes will result in tangible benefits if we don't have someone with Long's pace to take advantage of his passes and open up space for other players.

I thought we played some of our most dire football against Scotland in Dublin.

Murphy and Walters up front and two other players well into their thirties in midfield.

It was legless, pondering stuff.

I think even it he isn't putting people in on goal at all, you play him to try to set up sustained possession in the middle third and try to nurture vital periods of retained ball, otherwise you are looking at lower percentage ball with higher turnover all night. Having it can also draw the foul in a good delivery area to play to the two big lads strengths.

DeLorean

Exactly. And even in that Scotland game, I seem to remember Hoolahan slipping Murphy in on goal for what should have been the winner.

Had lost track of Shaughnessy. His brother's contract was extended at Leeds too wasn't it? Big year ahead for these boys next year.

The Hayes to Celtic rumour is still doing the rounds. Daily Mail (not the Gospel) reckon a bid has been accepted for 1.2m:

Interesting. Celtic throwing their weight around Bayern Munich style.
Hayes has 2 years left on his contract, practical for his club to look for best transfer terms, player wants to go, Celtic make an offer which is better than 3 other English championship clubs.
There's no throwing the weight around, as in tempting away a player away from a club desperate to keep him.
It's a handshake deal.

He's a sub for Forrest or a replacement when Forrest is not fully fit (back problems).

DeLorean
03/06/2017, 9:14 AM
It wasn't a criticism of Celtic, or Bayern either for that matter, it's just the way of the world unfortunately. Two years is a significant amount of time remaining on the contract of a player who turns 30 next month I think, there is no immediate panic for Aberdeen to cash in I wouldn't have thought, just a case of damage limitation if they're resigned to losing him anyway.

Hayes wants to go? Well he probably does now that Celtic are in for him. It's not like he's been beating down the door for a move and he signed a new contract extension at Aberdeen as recently as February, despite Cardiff trying to sign him the previous month.

Celtic are probably on a shortlist of the only clubs Aberdeen would prefer not to sell their players to, but as you suggest they're left with little choice if the player's head is turned and Celtic offered the most money. To me that is Celtic throwing their weight around, using their status and superior financial muscle to secure one of their closest challenger's best players.

I don't see how that's so different to Bayern coming knocking for Dortmund players which, again, they're entitled to do. It happens in every league to a certain extent but I think the reason I drew a comparison to Bayern is because the SPL and Bundesliga are now over before they begin in terms of the eventual winner, yet the gap is allowed to get bigger and bigger as they can pick off their closest rival's best players.

The fact that you suggest Hayes would only be a bit part player or back up to Forrest emphasises the muscle Celtic have even further, that they could take one of Aberdeen's most influential players just to bolster their own squad a little.

Obviously Celtic aren't on Bayern's level with the way they dismantled Dortmund's team, I was only making a throwaway remark about this 's particular transfer if it goes through, wasn't really expecting the statement to be analysed so thoroughly. :)
