The winners of the inaugural Setanta Cup, the North/South club competition for Eircom League and Irish League clubs sponsored by Setanta Sports, will receive a handsome cheque for EUR150,000 when the final is played on May 21 this year.
A total of 13 games will be played in the competition and at least ten will be covered live by Setanta Sports.
Following a meeting of the FAI, the IFA and the six clubs involved in Dundalk on Wednesday evening, FAI chief executive John Delaney enthused: "The prize fund for the winners and participants is significant and it will be of enormous benefit to the clubs involved, north and south.
"The competition will also enhance the great relationship which exists between the FAI and our colleagues in the IFA."
At the meeting a list of fixtures was agreed and the opening game, which will be between a team from either league, will take place on March 15. The final will be played on May 21.
Back-to-back Eircom League winners Shelbourne, dual FAI Cup champions Longford Town and Cork City will represent the eircom League; Linfield, Portadown and Glentoran will fly the flag for the northern equivalent.
There will be two groups of three teams with the top team from each group qualifying for the final and that all important prize fund. The draw for the competition will take place on January 27.
At least 2 games live, a good chance of 150000 and cup final in May. Looking forward to this......
