Very sad, and to have seemed to be in remission too after the initial diagnosis though at least he got to play again for a while. At the time of the Kick for Mark fundraising his former teammates said that he had lost speech so he certainly battled hard. There but for the grace of god! RIP Mark.

I'm quite shocked to hear this as I also didn't realise things were so bad for him. It doesn't seen that long ago his ex team mates were having bucket collections at LOI grounds for his treatment fund, I know it was well supported in Oriel Park and other grounds.

What a player he was in his prime, a deadly striker with a very impressive goals per game ratio. Would have loved to have seen him playing for us. He will be looked back as having made a huge contribution to Irish Football.

RIP Mark, this a very sad day for all his family and friends and in particular Derry City.

This is very sad news, particularly for his family and friends. At his age he should have still been banging in goals at the top level.
Rest in Peace.

Shocked to hear this. One of the great goal scorers this league has seen. The LOI family has lost one of its leading lights. RIP

Desperately sad news. In 15 or so years following LOI Farren was one of the best I've seen, one of them who you would always have loved to see wearing your team's shirt, not just for his goals but also for his commitment to his club. A true great and a truly courageous man.

"Derry City Football Club have made the decision to henceforth retire the Number 18 jersey worn by Mark Farren during his time at the club as a tribute to the club's all time leading goalscorer. ‪#‎Farren18‬"

Pretty gutted. An absolute hero.

Maribor Kev of this parish has published a tribute to Mark on the Derry City website (http://www.derrycityfc.net/2016/02/mark-farren-an-personal-appreciation/). Worth a read. RIP Mark.

His funeral Mass will be held in St Mary's Church, Ballybrack, Co Donegal, tomorrow, and he will be laid to rest beside his children - Terri, Marlie and Millie - who tragically died in 2014 shortly after their premature birth
Didn't know that either. Just one bad luck story after another.

His poor wife. How could you even begin to cope with all that?

That is a very moving piece and gives those of us who only knew the footballer, an insight into the man.

Never knew about his children - that's an incredible tragedy. Mark was a great goalscorer and a very brave man, but a really classy footballer too - not just a goalscorer.

Knew about the loss of the children and Mark has been battling for years himself through it all. Just an absolute tragic situation all round. Mark was one of the soundest fellas you'd ever meet, had time for everyone and was a cracking footballer, don't think you'd find many, if any, loi heads who would have had a bad word to say about him nor snapped the hand off you to have him playing up front for them. RIP Mark and forgive my French but **** cancer, an absolute ******* of a disease.

Just a note. The scenes before last nights game in Finn Park would have brought a tear to a glass eye. Marks family were in Finn Park as special guests of Harps and were on the field before the game as a minutes applause was shared by 5,000 people in memory of a League of Ireland legend.
