I've gone from thinking he wasting away at QPR to thinking he could replace Duffy in Ireland team over course of this season

I think O'Shea is well ahead of him at this stage and Collins could have a big season coming up as well, but Masterson is doing OK, if he can get 30+ games for QPR this year it will bring him on in a big way.

We shouldn't forget Clark either

I hope Masterson starts regularly this season. He was poor at weekend, according to match report and fans forum. Right now, people have new signing Dickie starting ahead of him with Barbet. Hopefully, Conor will get the nod....

Masterson wasn't even a guaranteed regular starter for QPR at the end of last season after Leistner and Hall had left, and yet you think he'll displace our best player in recent years in Duffy?

I would consider Duffy, Egan, Lenihan, O'Shea, Clark, Long, Collins and probably even Pearce to be better options than Masterson as things stand.

He's one of those players with a bigger reputation than his true standing in the game merits. Purely, I suspect, because he once was on Liverpool's books (without actually ever playing for them) and has a reputation for being a voguish ball-playing centre-back.

Similar could once have been said of Cleary and O'Hanlon.

I said could replace Duffy. My reasoning being that Kenny always played him in the 21s because he is a ball playing center half which he likes.
I also said by the end of the season because he has to develop and play regularly. Its not similar to Cleary and O'Hanlon because Masterson was playing regularly in Championship by end of last season. He obviously needs to kick on and be 1st choice in the QPR team this season.

Suggesting that a player playing in the top half of the Championship could replace one that couldn't get a game in the bottom half of the Premiership recently is hardly a massive stretch

Collins seems to have regressed since O'Neill took over at Stoke, hopefully he will play a bit more this year

Back to under 23 football today for Conor to keep fitness levels up

He and his agent should be pushing for a League One/League Two loan move to keep his career on track. He's played little senior football for a player of his age.

I can’t see it happening unfortunately. QPR are wafer thin at centre back at the moment, they cannot afford to let Conor go out. Dickie was league one last year, apparently wasn’t great at the weekend, Conor needs to take his place or hope for an injury. But yes needs 40 plus games this season

Not in squad today. Played for their under 23s 3 days ago, and doesn’t appeared to have been injured overtly on match report.

You are straight onto this thread when Masterson puts a foot wrong or isn't picked. Look back over your posts here. It's a vendetta to prove yourself right on your prediction for his career.

He's 22, not 19 like Collins. He needs to be playing regularly at this stage of his career. Sitting in a very average QPR team's reserves is not where you usually find future international quality centre halfs when they are 22.

If his career keeps progressing at this pace I could easily see him playing for Waterford in 2 years along with Afolabi.

Pretty odd outlook from you. Merely contributing to an open forum on Irish football respectfully.

Seems QPR want to bring in another experienced centre-back, with Masterson to be shipped out on loan as Warburton looks to cut his squad.

https://londonfootballnews.co.uk/qpr/qpr-duo-set-for-moves-as-warburton-looks-to-trim-squad/

At 22, Masterson desperately needs to be playing games at some level if he's to have any sort of long-term future in the professional game.

Pretty clear Masterson missed out on a couple of vital development years hanging around a Liverpool side he had no chance of ever being a part of, just there to make up the numbers really. Not the end of the world if he gets a good loan, and the comments in the article posted above were more positive than i was anticipating.

Starts today with Dickie suspended after red card. Another chance for Conor to impress and to get a run of games.

Happy to report the good and the bad as always

Seems to have done well according to twitter reports, up until he conceded cheap penalty for handball late in game - peno was saved and qpr won 3-2. Dickie actually back next game, some fans calling for Barbet to be dropped, so will see what happens. Hopefully Conor will get a run of games

Eirambler
31/10/2020, 4:33 PM
The penalty was technically saved I suppose but they scored straight from the rebound to make it 2-2. It looked like a ridiculous handball penalty to give away. I wouldn't be holding out too much hope of a run of games, will need injuries to get games I think.

Interestingly, the lad who was behind him at Liverpool (and a year older), Nat Phillips, is making his league debut for Liverpool now.

Spent last season playing first team football in Bundesliga 2 for Stuttgart. Doing pretty well. Weirdly had Masterson renewed his contract, gone on loan to Stuttgart for a season and was now making his league debut for Liverpool, we’d all be a lot more optimistic about his future...

Yes, Dickie is still out. I would expect Dickie to replace Conor once he returns, judging by fans forum and twitter. Good to see Conor getting games though. He should certainly push for league one loan in January if he returns to bench

Gets his league one loan today, to Swindon. Probably a level he should have gone and played at two or three years ago but hopefully this move will finally allow him to get a good run of games and build up the physical side of his game. Turns 23 this year so needs this loan move to work out to allow him to kick on.

Olé Olé
19/01/2021, 1:22 PM
Yep. He has Mark Travers behind him there too who is ex-Lucan United and played with him on Irish teams too. As you say, he might have needed this a long time ago (see Dara O'Shea at Exeter) but better late than never. John Sheridan is manager there.

Eh he went to QPR a year and a half ago. Why would he go to a lower level? He was right to give it a go there and test himself at that level. He's made 20 appearances so got some experience. Probably got himself a decent contract at the time too so it hard to turn that down.

The simple answer is they make it up (or educated guess, to be kinder).

Here's an interesting article on Transfermarkt (transfer values rather than wages, but same principle):

No, the point I was making was that he should have gone out on loan at League 1 or League 2 level while he was with Liverpool. I felt that just staying put and playing under 23s hindered his development compared to someone like Dara O'Shea who went to non league and Exeter and is now a Premier League regular. Mark McGuinness is doing something similar this season with Ipswich.

There was nothing necessarily wrong with the QPR switch, but some damage was probably done to his prospects earlier in his career.

Conor is out for the rest of the season, due to a bad hamstring injury (West London Sport, 15/02/21).

Eirambler
15/02/2021, 4:11 PM
That's a disaster for him really. He was already behind in his development and needed the run of games at Swindon badly. Now he loses another four or five months at a minimum.

Masterson now going on loan for the rest of the season to Gillingham, currently 23rd in EFL 1. He made 15 starts and one sub appearance in EFL 1 for Cambridge Utd between 21 August and 27 November 2021, but hasn't been in the match-day squad for their last few games (BBC Football, Transfermarkt, 28 Jan).

tommy_c12000

Cambridge terminated the deal earlier this month, hence no appearances recently. Gillingham are poor this season, hopefully Conor can get 4 months of starts with them

I was never impressed with him from the moment he made his senior bow. Tidy on the ball though. Underage standout but just didn?t develop well into senior ranks, and stayed too long at Liverpool.
