Liam George’s hopes of a new career at Gillingham have ended in disappointment after his trial spell failed to produce a contract offer.

there were a few quotes from him in the star a few weeks ago, in which he said he might consider moving over here to rebuild his career. mightn't be a bad signing.

I think George Hamilton said during the recent playing of the U-17 European Championship win on RTE 2 that he had to retire recently

Liam George, 5-10, 163, joins the Silverbacks with more than ten years of professional playing experience. George rose through the ranks with League Championship team - Luton Town Football Club in England. George, a native of Ireland, played with the Republic of Ireland’s U18 team when the team won the 1998 UEFA European Cup. During the championship match, George put away a penalty kick to seal the title and was selected to the All-Tournament team. During his 19 games with the U18 team, George scored 10 goals. He later played with the Republic of Ireland’s U21 team, scoring four goals. George has signed a contract with the Silverbacks and he'll be cleared to play after he receives international clearance.

UCD signed Seán Finn (now with Dundalk) from them. So it's very comparable to eL level. Clearly didn't really make the grade at AFC Wimbledon. Sad to see really.

Yeah, he was absolute muck at Pats. Don't think he even got a start in the league if memory serves me right.

So, where is that UEFA Cup winning team now ?

IRELAND O'Reilly; Heary, Dunne, Gavin, Doyle; Crossley, B. Quinn (capt), McPhail, Partridge; Keane, George.

It's fair to say that only Dunne and Keane really made it. Most of the others gave it a go but alas it wasn't to be for them.

Barry Quinn is at Oxford, after falling down the divisions when Coventry City couldn't afford to keep him on
McPhail is at Barnsley

Could be wrong here (and I have been before!) but isn't Richie Partridge struggling to get his game with Sheffield Wednesday at the moment? Or is this another Partridge?

Also remember Barry Quinn making his debut for the Irish senior team (many moons ago) and being quite impressed with him at the time...looked like a good strong fellah and a neat passer of the ball...so much for that!!

Yep, Partridge is at the Owls and not getting his game. DOncaster next stop :(

2 out of 11 made it - that was just the point I was making.

Thing is Partridge should be getting more of a game in my opinion. I think Sturrock feels he is too light and doesn't do his defensive duties. When he has come on he has turned games. Sturrock sees him as a luxury player, and at the moment Brunt is his "luxury" player.

He'll be off this summer.

Of that team 4 have been capped , O'Rielly and Crossley are the only ones that are not full time professionals. Thats not bad at all.

eirebhoy

I feel if Partridge hadn't got his injury problems he'd certainly be playing premiership football now. Even with the problems I'm really suprised he's not getting his game for Wednesday.

Who are O'Reilly and Crossley playing with now does anyone know???

pineapple stu
31/03/2006, 12:39 PM
I can't even remember who O'Reilly is!

Ger Crossley went from Celtic (?) to Aalborg in Denmark to Galway United (played for them in the 1999/00 season) and then dropped off the face of the football map, as far as I can seen.

Edit - O'Reilly's Alex O'Reiily, is he? Wasn't he at Port Vale? Vaguely remember him playing an FA Cup tie against Everton or something...could be completely imagining that though!

Dj Duffer

Ya i did a google search on Ger Crossley and the last date his name popped up was in 2001 with Dundalk and Galway! Cant find O Reilly anywhere though!

Alex O'Reilly was with West Ham at the time I think.
Went down the non league road and I think he played
with Dagenham and Redbridge for a while

The EBSA has a beach soccer league up and running on the Isle of Wight and is looking to set up new league around the UK.

Surely midlands clubs are at a serious disadvantage in this sport?

I know his Da.
He's from Ballyer. There was a documentary made about him, his nickname was 'Oko'. And he was class in that tournament if I remember.
He went down the non-league route fairly quickly as far as I know, playing for Boston or Braintree United or something similar.
Pretty sure he hasn't played the game in a good few years
