Cork's best player, by some distance. He's not a left back though.
He is a very important player for us and it would be very disappointing if he was to leave.
We really need to be getting in someone in the midfield who will get us plenty of goals like towell for dundalk

Hearing Stephen Folan to Galway. Thought he was very good when alongside Sami Oji at limerick.

You already have one. Gavan Holohan is the best attacking midfielder in the league after Towell and Finn. A players I wouldn't mind seeing in Oriel Park.

At the time I always felt Oji made him look good. Was a lost puppy without Oji. In saying that he has the attributes to become a good centre half as he gets a bit older I reckon. Still young enough.

John O'Flynn to Cobh is looking likely. Would be a great signing, have lacked a main striker since Dub left

Lost without Oji when he was at Limerick, dreadful the couple of times I saw him play for Sligo and couldn't get a game at Cork. Poor positional sense, can't pass a ball to save his life, finds it easy to lose his man at set-pieces(unfortuneately it's when he's supposed to be defending) What other attributes am I missing?

Far from it. He done pretty Ok with us. Was one of our better players before he left.
Gaynor is horrific. If anyone doubts me re watch the fai cup final. All he does is clip balls down the line to absolutely know body and is afraid to head the ball, it's embarrassing. Yes he can cross a ball but that doesn't take away from the fact that he gives ball away 8/10 times. Was the same at Sligo.
That's very harsh, he may be technically limited at times but overall I found him to be a decent player who gives his all most times I saw him playing. Had a decent season for us in 2010. I always thought he would be the perfect type of player who with a lot better one to one coaching would have improved significantly, in saying that he has served all the sides he played with well in my view.

Absolute tosh! Gaynor is one of the best left back's in the league. Might not be amazing defensively but has a lovely left foot. In fairness to him in the FAI cup final there was wicked wind down one side of the pitch at one stage. I know because i was sitting there. One corner flag was almost horizontal with the wind while all the rest were still - very odd. That played havoc with some of his passes. It's the same reason why Rogers threw a ball straight to a cork attackers feet at one stage.

Is it not a bit of a contradiction to say a player is one of the best left backs but then say he's not great at defending. That's his number one job. If you are better a whipping crosses then you are a winger.

Gaynor is a very good footballer..
Has a sweet left foot & will do well for any club he's with.
May not be a total defender but very exciting going forward.
Always enjoyed watching him play.

I would consider him more of a wing back rather than an out & out defender.

Yea wing back is probably his perfect position.
It might look a bit odd but i still don't think it's much of a contradiction. he's not a bad defender, I just said he wasn't amazing. but i still think he was one of the top left backs last year, because the way Cork play suits him as he spends a lot more time attacking than defending. he excellent at advancing forward from a deep position.
Nowadays, it's v common to see most teams play with at least one v attacking full back anyway. It's especially common if the left sided attacking midfielder is right footed and likes to drift centrally, like Sheppard does for Cork, leaving space for Gaynor to overlap and offer the width.
Just last weekend Mourinho played with Kenedy (young Brazilian winger who is v attacking) at left back because he knew that Chelsea were gonna dominate possession at home against Norwich and that most of the time he wouldn't have any defending to do. He was spot on.

If those contracts were broken of course we would be screwed, though we woudl have legal recourse. Has a sponsor ever pulled out mid season before? A major one?
NTL reneged on payment during the second year of a two-year deal with Bray Wanderers in 2003. I don't know if they pulled out of their other football sponsorships (Celtic & Rangers in the SPL, Newcastle and I think three others in the EPL).
Would the legal route work in such circumstances?

How could dundalk allow that to happen? I know 2 year deals are frowned upon around here, but if ever a player should have been tied down to a long term deal it was towell.

Richie didn't want to sign a multi year deal. Why would he?
Dundalk did very well to hold on to him last season and to have him for all of 2015. He was already one of the few on a 52 week deal in the league, both him and Horgan knew exactly what they were doing by signing 12 month deals last year. They would have been crazy to sign anything more than 12 months. Even if there was a transfer fee in scope, UK clubs are notorious for paying as little as they can, especially to Irish clubs. Hoban went for nothing, and so will Towell and Horgan too if he gets a deal. No transfer fee makes it more attractive also for the UK club to deal with the player.
He was superb for Dundalk, and he will be badly missed, but not by the teams challenging ! hard to see who can replace him, but this day was coming.

@Sundance kid: Contract situations in LOI are v different to premier league. Once a LOI player turns 23 the club has no way of holding on to them unless they're tied down to a contract. The best players are all well aware of this so if they have intentions of moving once they hit 23, they'll make sure that they're contract is up so foreign clubs won't be put off by having to pay a fee.
Further explanation here: http://www.the42.ie/league-of-ireland-column-transfers-age-23-2246949-Jul2015/

There's nothing different about the LOI there.
Loads of players have turned down longer deals effectively backing themselves to get a bigger move. Dundalk delighted to get one more year out of Towell so hardly likely to not sign him unless it's for 3 years...

Any agent worth their salt wouldn't let Towell sign a 2 year deal with a LOI club, Dundalk done very well to keep hold of him last season, they done the double and he gets a handy deal in England without any transfer fees to negotiate, everyone's a winner
Finn was even signed last year on the assumption that Towell was leaving, so having him onboard for 2015 was a huge bonus and as PS alluded to above, he won the double, scored both goals to seal the league and the cup.
Everyone a winner indeed, and the very best of luck to him if this move works out. Few have worked harder to get it, plus its very unusual to get a second bite of the cherry across the water, after coming home, Fahey was another rare example.

Even though Dundalk had a great squad last season Towell was often the difference between winning or losing a close game.
It was great to have a player like that in the League.
Yes the challenging clubs won't mourn his loss but he will be a big loss to the league as a whole.

More whispers that Fagan wants out of Pats. I dismissed them at first but......
I've been told that Pats are offering their out-of-contract players less money than last season. Now obviously that might just have been the offer to the player in question, but that's the rumour from a "good friend" of one of the senior regular first teamers.
Ian Bermingham was happy enough with his offer. The only out of countract players not signed up are Clarke, Byrne, Langley, Brennan, Chambers and Greene. Not all of them will receive an offer

I'm glad to hear that we are offering less, most players aren't in s strong bargaining position after their performances last season.
