Hugely committed defensive performance by the Youths, coupled with a piece of clinical finishing from Danny Furlong, got the Youths over the line in Belfield tonight. However, UCD will probably feel that they should have got something from the game. With Danny's two attacking colleagues, Andy and Rocks, missing through injury and suspension respectively, Shane Keegan brought in Eric Molloy and Hopper Kenny and started with 4-4-1-1 with Hopper adopting the supporting role behind Danny up front. UCD began with their usual slick passing game although they take a lot out of the ball at the back. This led to the Youth's first chance after three minutes when they gave the ball away cheaply and Speedy Whittle had a shot blocked for a corner. UCD's first decent effort on goal came on eight minutes and also registered on the scoreboard as a long distance shot by Dylan Watts apparently took a deflection on its way as Graham hardly moved to put UCD 1-0 up. On ten minutes, Danny had a free-kick in a dangerous position but Mackey in the UCD goal managed to push it round the post for a corner. Then, on 20 minutes, slightly against the run of play, Speedy came inside his UCD opponent inside the UCD box a bit too easily, and passed the ball into the net past Mackey for 1-1.

Just after the half-hour, Graham pushed away a UCD effort on target and O'Connor for UCD, almost on the end-line, was unable to get the rebound on target to leave the score at 1-1. The Youth's defence were working hard at this stage to keep the UCD forwards at bay with Gary Delaney outstanding to leave the score at 1-1 at half-time and with UCD having picked up two yellow cards late on in the half. First half shaded by UCD. Wexford began the second half in a better fashion without creating too much and chances were hard to come by from either side as the second period progressed. It suggested that the Youths might be happy to leave Dublin with a point. First decent chance for UCD in this half came on 21 minutes when a long throw from UCD was nearly headed into the Youth's net by a defender but it was hooked away from danger at the last second. A minute later, Duxey Dunne put Danny through on goal with a neat pass, and with UCD's Mackey advancing out quickly from goal, Danny rifled it high into the roof of the net to put the Youths 2-1 ahead. One chance and one goal from Danny. Danny then had another effort on target which was grabbed by Mackey at the second attempt and Graham, in the Youth's goal, had to get down to stop a daisy-cutter from UCD. UCD then piled on the pressure in the last ten minutes and hit the post with a header which was blown for a foul before Gary O'Neil hit the bar with a free with Graham stranded to leave the final score at 2-1 to the Youths at full-time.

Late subs for the Youths were Craig Wall, Willie Tyrell and John Peare. Best for Wexford was a very solid back four with Gary Delaney an obvious candidate for MOM; he looks a serious prospect at this stage. In front of them, Peter Higgins was outstanding in midfield as he repeatedly won the ball as the UCD midfielders came at him. In addition to his finish, Danny's play with his back to goal was also very impressive. 2-1 to the Youths at full-time. Haven't seen Shane Keegan so animated after a match so I reckon he believes the job is done.
