Funny that he cannot make our U21 squad even though he must be doing something right at Liverpool. Hope he gets a run out.

it's been mentioned a few times that the Liverpool youth players - O'Hanlon, Masterson and Cleary - have been absent from several underage squads in the last 12 months

Its great for him and well done. He is a bit fortunate though that liverpool have at least 4 players who can play centre half around the same age as him out on loan jones, williams, stewart and illori has opened the door.

I think you're onto something there.

did some checking on this
I was wrong about Masterson, he was in the U17 squad in April for the UEFA U17 Championship in Bulgaria: http://www.fai.ie/ireland/news/mohan-names-squad-for-uefa-u17-championships-finals
He captained the side in all three games against Netherlands, Italy and England. He wasn't included in the U19 squad for the recent friendly against Italy - http://www.fai.ie/ireland/news/doolin-names-ireland-u19-squad-for-italy-friendly-game The U19's are hosting their qualifiers in November against Scotland, Latvia and Slovenia - http://www.fai.ie/ireland/news/paul-doolin-reacts-to-uefa-u19-draws - it will be interesting to see if he's included in the squad for those games.
O'Hanlon hasn't been named in a squad (at least that I can find) since the U19 elite qualifiers in April 2014: http://www.fai.ie/ireland/news/ireland-ready-for-uefa-u19-championships-elite-phase-at-tallaght-stadium
Cleary was in the U19 squad for two friendlies against Mexico a month earlier: http://www.fai.ie/ireland/news/doolin-announces-ireland-u19-squad-for-mexico-friendlies
I didn't mention Corey Whelan in my original post, but he hasn't featured in a squad since the U17's Elite Qualifiers in May 2014: http://www.fai.ie/ireland/news/mohan-announces-ireland-u17-squad-for-uefa-elite-qualifiers
It was mentioned on fai.ie that he was unavailable for the same U19 friendly against Italy that Masterson was omitted from

Obviously both O'Hanlon and Cleary have been featuring regularly for Liverpool's youth side since then, so you'd have to wonder what's going on that they're not getting selected for the Irish underage sides

There is not much said about him, just a throw away line at the end.

Irish defender Dan Cleary is another believed to have made the trip.

That is good, however it is not a competition Liverpool take seriously? ie
a chance to rest their top players, but it is still quite an achievement, shows he is
highly regarded.

A real pity Cleary is injured himself with the centre back situation at Liverpool at the moment. Got a mention in the Liverpool Echo (http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpool-fc-transfers-7-centre-10696307#ICID=sharebar_whatsapp) as they assess their options.

ONE ALREADY AT ANFIELD

Daniel Cleary

Cleary has been at Liverpool’s academy since the age of 11 and was included in the squad’s pre-season tour of Bangkok, Brisbane, Adelaide and Malaysia.

Although the 19-year-old Irishman has turned out regularly for the U21 side, it is unclear whether he is ready to make the step up to the Premier League.

Cleary is currently injured, however, and is unable to help in the short term.

Despite being a good prospect, Klopp is more likely to invest in an experienced centre-half who can slot into the side immediately and command the defensive line.

What happened here? Just released? I know O'Hanlon rejected a new contract but can't remember anything about Cleary.

That would be a decent place to land. Good scoop, TOWK, and not your first one. What's your source? I was looking on the Birmingham site for news of Ronan Hale's progress and saw no mention of him (admittedly they didn't put up teamsheets for the U-21 games)

Birmingham set to land former Liverpool youngster Cleary (http://www.hitc.com/en-gb/2016/07/26/por-birmingham-set-to-land-former-liverpool-youngster-cleary/)If this statement is accurate, it would be a terrific bonus to this move:
"Cleary is initially set to link up with Birmingham's development squad before being fast-tracked into the Blues' first-team as Rowett is a big admirer of the player"

Move confirmed - one-year deal with the option of one more:
