So that makes him English then, also in the top five people were James Connelly, born in Edinburgh, Jim Larkin born in Liverpool and Constance Markievicz born in London. I guess they were all British too then.

What the f**k do they teach you in schools over there about emigration, or is it just a case of to be Irish you have to born there or have the accent.

Hear, hear.

Some people have short memories. Irish people were forced to leave these shores because we were an economic basket-case. Only those who were lucky got to stay. Its only recently that people have been the possibility to return home.

I myself spent a few of my early years in England. My parents came back so that I was born in Dublin, and eventually came back full time in the mid-eighties as soon as they could find a job in Ireland.

The people who would call us English are the same gobsh1tes that called Mick McCarthy English just because he had a Yorkshire accent. They need to get a life and take their heads out of the f**king sand!

I think you're secretly jealous in referring to McGowan as an "Englishman". Why else should it bother you that he is English-born? Do you wanna be a "plastic" too, Joe?

Mind, if I was from Limerick, maybe I'd be thinking the same... :p

Fair play. Im also a "plastic" although I realise to many that just means english. I think it is pathetic that a small number of irish have developed some sort of superiority complex over thier fellow country men, simply because of what accent they have. As far as im concerned that attitude is a disgrace, and as already mentioned in this thread, it shows you have no idea nor understanding of irish history. As far as Im concerned, being Irish is about taking a pride in your history, and comes from the heart, not from an accent!
