A couple of surprise 2nd gens to be grandfathered into the squad and this'll be TOWK tomorrow, after he's composed and posted the Ulysses of diatribes of course.

Barring that, can't see there being any surprises in the squad, really need 6 from 6 out of these two games or else that's game over.

Yeah events elsewhere are probably more important this time around, assuming we don't completely finish ourselves off.

I'm surprised there isn't a bit of a hullabaloo about he who must decide... is it not D-Day on that front, if he is called up? I know he's currently injured but I don't think that's too serious.

I would like to see a few younger names included. Especially Duffy & Cunningham perhaps even Mason, Williams etc.
But I expect the likes of Ward, Pearce, Green & Stokes to be named...

has to be 6 points though can never be sure. the georgia game will be hard going i expect.

i assume this will be the huge 35 man squad that will then be 'whittled down'.

on a personal note i'll be in brooklyn for both of these. i'm sure there's a thread on this somewhere but i couldn't find one - any tips on where to watch it?

I want to see new faces in this squad as they are the perfect games to introduce them especially v Gibraltar. However, I will be shocked if there is even one newcomer & I expect the same old same old. :(

Cunningham getting more rave reviews after Saturday there. One person even stated he's the best left back he's seen at Preston. Given the dearth of options in his position (I don't think Brady is the long term solution, too effective further forward) then it'd be a shame if he weren't selected. Or maybe I'm reading too much into a couple of games back at Championship.

Eunan O'Kane makes his first Premier League start tonight for Bournemouth away to Liverpool. Will it be enough to see him named? I'm assuming it'll be the usual process; preliminary squad before a refined final squad?

O'Kane put in a fantastic shift......covered so much ground and was one of the better performers in a very good Bournemouth Team performance

Didnt look out of place at Anfield at all tonight...really good game for him

O'Neill said in the press conference a decision will be made "shortly"/"soon" and is "worth waiting for" after having had "fruitful" discussions with the pair. I dunno how soon that means, but if it's not by the end of September, I don't think I can defend someone going back on their stated word.

He's played a full 90 in all three of Blackburn's games so far this season. Indeed, no reason why he shouldn't be there. Gibraltar would have been a perfect outing for him.

No call-up for Brian Lenihan either; his form of late obviously not as good as it was on that flight to England. Is Andy Reid fit or what's the story there? And is Joey O'Brien re-available or is it fair to assume he's virtually retired from international?

Just a dead leg. Derby don't seem to have much luck with injuries to midfielders, their young converted midfielder, Hanson, went off with concussion as well, to add to Hughes (cruciate) and Bryson from the opening day.

Duffy wouldn't get a run even if he was in the squad. It'll be the same at the back injury and suspension permitting until the end of the campaign. We're coming down with centre halves of a similar stature, so I'm not totally concerned about him not being there. His time will come.

I'd like to get him tied down to us all the same, especially with the north on the verge of qualifying. Gibraltar is a change to look at fringe players and put competitive caps on players at the fringes who have other options.

Duffy really isn't on the verge of flipping, ever, regardless of how Northern Ireland do - he's spoken multiple times about how it's his dream to play for the Republic, his da's from Donegal etc etc etc. It ain't going to happen short of a massive blow-up with the FAI/management. And while hardly unheard of, it seems unlikely.

As for Gibraltar, I wouldn't chance too much bar our attacking shape. We should be looking to gel a team together for the last four games particularly since we've played with no cohesion or consistency at all.

You say that like a massive blow up with the FAI/management has never happened before! :p

I just like to have these things all officially tied up where possible. I have no doubt that he is a very patriotic Irishman, but strange things happen in football.

At the end of the day he has been around the squad for 5 years now, and has managed to pick up 1 cap in a friendly. If the chance to play in a major tournament is presented to him on a plate, there is no doubt in my mind that he would be faced with an agent and club manager (for their own selfish reasons) urging him that he can't wait around forever on the Republic, and that he should jump at the chance to play in the Euro's with the North.

We will have to make changes at the back anyway. O'Shea isn't getting a game at Sunderland, and we will need to pick a new goalkeeper with Given on the bench for Stoke. There is no getting round it.

I'd assume Clark will come in. I don't think anyone, including O'Neill, knows who will be in goal.

Don't fret. Shane is irrevocably tied to us as he has already played for us competitively after having also represented the IFA at under-age level competitively. Same story with Eunan O'Kane, to the best of my knowledge. Even if Shane wasn't tied, I don't think he'd be keen on going anywhere else. He's Ireland through and through.

The lack of game time for those two doesn't mean much. O'Shea whether he's getting a game or not is the experienced head on the centre of defence - he'll be playing. Wilson, different story. Clark might come in for him but the changes will be enforced from the established centre halves we have rather than giving a game to Duffy or someone else.

Likewise, Given got his first start with us off the back of a couple of FA Cup games and subseqently became Villa's number one for three months where he didn't even play that well. If O'Neill deemed him good enough then, not an awful lot has changed. Think he's staying as number one until this campaign's over, though I'd be happy to be wrong.

Play competitive for one then switch and play competitive for the other means switch is used (same situation as Michael Keane).

Don't play competitive for one then switch (not considered switch by FIFA) and play competitive for another means you still have a switch to use so can switch back.

In this case, Duffy played a spate of games for NI underage and, subsequently, a spate of games for Ireland underage. Some of the games, for both sides, were competitive. Consequently, switch has been used and Duffy is tied, whether he likes it or not (but he clearly does).

His time will come. No rush with Duffy. Sure even if he looked at the NI side he'd note that Cathcart, Evans and McAuley are bound to be ahead of him. Then there's Baird and McNair. 23 is young enough for a defender. I look forward to his gradual, organic progression.

Big time. He's had his rest now he can tune up his match fitness this weekend because if he doesn't start then he ought to pack his bags.

The question was actually put to Stephen Hunt about (his good pal, as per Hunt) O'Shea moving on if he doesn't get back into the team before window's end. Hunt said O'Shea is too loyal and wouldn't push for that.

Anyway, he was excellent against the Scots.

Wait a minute - by my reckoning all the players cut from the squad are either injured or were placed on the standby list...except for one - and I'm not sure whether leaving David McGoldrick out is a good idea, given that he's got three goals in his last four games and that he got two assists on his debut for us. Surely, if there was a chance to experiment against Georgia and particularly Gibraltar, it would have been a good idea to give him some more game time with the other players, so that if we were in a situation where we had to go all-out in attack in later games, we could call on him to provide some extra speed and link play up front.

Stuttgart88
30/08/2015, 10:10 AM
No way should Georgia be seen as an opportunity to experiment!

Interesting to see Pilkington retained. Rooney and Doyle too. O'Kane has played himself into the squad on merit. As DeLorean said, maybe it's a good thing Murphy is injured as it'll take any idea of starting him over Long away from O'Neill's thoughts.

28 is still large though.

i hope he does start long in both games but i would be surprised if he did. given mcgeady's form is there a case for playing long out wide? i'd prefer him up front but o'neill has in effect stated that he doesn't score enough.

i don't really like the idea of experimentation at this stage, even against gibraltar so i'd like to see basically the same team in both games, one or two changes max. i can't see MON suddenly hitting on some great new selection / formation, i'd rather a settled team going into the last two games.
