Looks like the way forward for away games:

From the FAI

We have just announced our points system for Fans' Direct, which will be implemented on a pilot basis for the upcoming away Euro Qualification matches against Gibraltar and Poland and a potential play-off away leg in November.

Details of the Away Ticketing Scheme can be viewed through the following link - http://www.fai.ie/ireland/news/away-ticketing-scheme-details-released

If have already registered your details with Fans' Direct there is no further action required at this point.

The away portal will open to applications for the Gibraltar fixture on Friday 24th July at midday and will remain open until Monday 03rd August and we will send you a reminder e-mail and the relevant link when it opens.

Applications will be confirmed by email w/b 03rd August at which point payment will be required. With 9,800 tickets available for the Gibraltar away fixture it is anticipated that all applicants will receive tickets.

As mentioned in the announcement, members of Fans' Direct will receive relevant points totals in advance of the Poland fixture. Tickets will be allocated for this fixture on the basis of points.

Please note that the scheme is being run on a pilot basis for the remaining two away matches of the current campaign -- or three if we reach a play-off. It is starting out with initial percentage allocations based on current updates from Fans' Direct and FAI Supporters' Clubs but these percentages will be reviewed and revised upwards should these numbers grow.

We thank you for your continued support and look forward to receiving your application through the portal when it opens on Friday 24th July.

I don't get this bit. How could someone already be registered if they Fans' Direct system has just been launched?
Do they mean if you're already registered on the away tickets portal they've been using for the last few years?

If you emailed them way back when, they may have already registered you.

Pathetic system anyway, with only 30% of tickets going to fans. The rest to Abbey Travel and whoever is a good mucker of John Delaney.
