He certainly deserves a new deal, but will have to start playing a damn sight better in order to make sure he is first choice next season.

If I was Pat Dolan I think I would be looking at the following facts.
1. Dan is still a young man, with more of his potential still to come out.
2. His weakness in distribution and lamentable shooting skills are his obvious deficiencies, but he is a strong defender who is able to close down class forwards like few others in the EL.
3. He is always a danger in the air in set pieces.
4. In the last quarter of the season he became more confident going forward.
I think the club are getting it right by renewing his contract.
