Finally (http://www.savoytheatre.ie/) it is due to re-open this Friday, December 10, exactly 4 years after it first opened its doors in its new incarnation.

What do peopple think about this for Corks club scene?

Personally, I always felt the Savoy was a poor choice for a 'club' night. The place is too big, sapping all athmosphere into the cavernous roof. Perhaps if they just kept the Foyer upstairs for the club, it would work.

However, I do believe that it will give the live music scene in Cork a huge shot in the arm. It is a great venue for live bands. Ive only really seen Lemon Jelly, Ugly Duckling and Fishgodeep play there, but Im told by others that any gigs they have been to there, have been fantastic.

Heres hoping its a success, and that they actually have the sound sorted this time, as for long periods before, it was shocking.

I saw cyclefly and relish there and they were alright, good place for a gig though.

and I got kicked out of freakscene in there one night for starting a one man mosh pit.

i also fell down the stairs once.

and guinness ran a promotion in there where they'd show a champions league game and give you free pints till it came out your ear. and they had your man Fr.Damo off Fr.Ted doing some "comedy" at half time.

Simple Minds and New Order both played the Savoy in the 80s...

Thing about the Savoy when it opened first, they were they only ones doing anything ... the night club scene in Cork was dead to be honest. It might have revived it a bit ... hope it does the same now aswell.
At least they will spend money bringing in good bands etc.

Being a 'young pup' my early memories of the Savoy were as a brilliant games arcade where you paid £2 to get in and all the games were free for the hour or two that you were in there + they had a few cool slides that went all over the place... ah the memories :) Got to the last 4 of Street Fighter II once and some nobb€r pressed the 2 player button and made me play him and go right back to the start  . I still havent forgiven him (lang€r!)

Its ok as a club I guess, but its different from everywhere else, and thats what makes it better than most places + its got to be the best live venue around.

Apparently Stevie G is moving Jam back to there on Fridays. Pity, as Fast Henrys was becoming quite good.

No doubt Greg and Shane will follow suit. Again, pity. The Savoy is just too big for normal club nights like these.
