Vikings re-sign Whelehan

December 7, 2004

Dublin City manager Dermot Keely continued his policy of bringing previous players back to the club by completing the signing of highly-regarded central defender Ben Whelehan from Waterford United.

Whelehan was one of 15 players released by controversial boss Roddy Collins during his brief spell in charge of the club last season.

Keely, who took over from Collins for the final three games of the season, has been quick to rebuild those bridges, re-signing several players released by Collins, including son Alan from Finn Harps, Robbie Collins from Monaghan United, Ray Scully from Kildare County and David McGill, who had not joined a senior club after his departure from City.

Whelehan takes the number of players released by Collins but who have since returned to the club to five.

The former Kildare County man made an impression with Waterford in the latter stages of the season, and started the FAI Carlsberg Cup final defeat to Longford Town in October.

The 25-year-old signed on the dotted line at the club over the weekend before setting off for the Canary Islands for a pre-Christmas holiday.

Keely has also re-signed two of last season’s most promising under-21s at the club, Dean Brennan and Steve McCrossan.
