In case people are wondering, BATE v Dundalk (Wednesday, July 15) will be shown Live on БЕЛАРУСЬ 5 (Belarus 5), coverage starts at 18:25
That's the best so far...

You'd imagine Setanta might pick that up yet.

I'd fully expect Setanta to pick this up seeing as they picked up the Europa league games.

Apparently setanta only have rights for the Europa league and sold the CL rights to bt sports, so unless rte show the game it won't be on Irish tv's....

It seems that BATE v Dundalk is live on Belarussian television, so hopefully we'll at least be able to pick up a stream

Sent off emails and tweets to RTÉ asking about live coverage of the CL game, but to no avail. Even a tweet to Tony O'Donoghue asking did he know of any plans to cover the games, but nothing back there either. Didn't really expect any reply, but sure, you don't know until you try.

It's pretty disappointing to say the least from RTÉ.

Rte wont show any champions league games until the last qualfing round, If I remember correctly they said a few years a ago it was something to do with the rights they had & it would cause them to Renegotiate their rights to allow them to show more games

Rights are free before the group stages afaik.

By that they mean they won't pay to show any more games

Champions League qualifying rounds 1, 2 & 3 and Europa League qualifying rounds 1, 2, 3 & play off are not covered by any TV contracts and can be shown by any channel that wishes to do so (provided they pay)

The rights deals relating to group stages (and CL play off!) have nothing to do with it (For example Skonto v Pats was shown on Premier Sports in the UK despite BT sport having the EL rights).

RTE won't bother unless it's a huge European side or any bog-standard English team. Setanta are the only chance of coverage, but that depends on Belarussian TV giving them a reasonable rate.

No hope there at this late stage so its dodgy online streams and twitter updates. Bit odd really when Corks game in Iceland was shown. No matter, back in the day it was listening to lmfm on a phoneline on to hear Ricy McEvoy score and tease us with the away goal :/

I dunno, I'm sure one of the Rovers games a few years back (Talinn I think) was announced less than 24 hours before kick off. I'd imagine the host broadcaster is the problem - they presumably paid a decent wedge for the rights and would have expected a country like Ireland to be offering more than Setanta are.

For anyone interested, TNS v Videoton is on Welsh channel S4C tonight. Available on Sky, and presumably UPC. Kick off at 7pm there.

There were streams for Tallinn and Copenhagen that season too, I'm almost sure at least one had English commentary so must have been on tv somewhere too.

Edit, if I remember correctly Rovers actually streamed the Tallinn match themselves and the Danish one was on tv someplace.

Setanta showed the away leg v Copenhagen. RTE showed the home leg.

RTE then showed home leg v Partizan Belgrade and Setanta showed the away leg

That home leg v Partizan is the last time RTE have showed a European game. ROvers group games were on tv3/3e

Since then on Setanta
2012 Ekranes v Rovers (CL)
2013 Trabzonspor v Derry (EL)
2013 Derry v Trabzonspor (EL)
2014 Legia v Pats (CL)
2014 Pats v Legia (CL)
2015 Skonto v Pats (EL)
2015 KR v Cork (EL)
2015 Slovan v UCD (EL)

Is there any local radio commentary on the match to save listening to foreign commentary?

BATE are live streaming it on their website and the good folk who look after DFC.com have embedded a player there for it:

Commentary tonight will be in Belarussian so make sure to get the lads on Dundalk FM on too, although the Belarussian commentary will probably make more sense a lot of the time!

Ljs website have all the live feeds for most televised games besides any unofficial streams, Setanta over the last few years always seem to pick up the rights to any Irish involved teams where the local broadcaster is showing the game.

Comparing different seasons is not the best indication I know, but BATE well beat Slovan last year in CL. Dundalk could have taken a draw home last night. If Dundalk draw UCD in Belfield in the cup it would be considered a tricky enough tie so UCD could be a nuisance for the Slovakians. Beating a side over two legs is another matter for both UCD and Dundalk, though Dundalk having the first leg away,a supposed an advantage for progression. Didnt happen for Pats last season but maybe that we have this in Oriel rather than having to move the fixture will add to our chances. Rovers I feel should be expecting to win though inurys have blunted their chances a little.

RTÉ Sport to screen Dundalk versus BATE Borisov (http://www.rte.ie/sport/soccer/2015/0717/715574-rte-sport-to-screen-dundalk-versus-bate-borisov/)

“We are delighted to be able to bring live coverage of Dundalk’s decisive UEFA Champions League home leg against BATE Borisov to RTÉ2 next Wednesday.”

"The UEFA Champions League is undoubtedly the premier club tournament in world and it is exciting to be able to show a fixture featuring the SSE Airtricity League champions who have a real chance of progressing to the third qualifying round.”

Oh well Setanta would surely want to show Dundalk, but as far as I know the host broadcaster has a responsibility to cover their home teams so at least one of RTE and TV3 would have to. Probably both actually as they have alternating days. That's how it worked with the Europa League and Rovers anyway - TV3 couldn't just ignore us and show Celtic, which probably would have been a better commercial decision.

More exposure the better , Setanta do great work but only RTE can bring viewership in the hundreds of thousands.

Wouldn't it be great to see them having to show an LOI team and not their beloved Man Utd. Not that it will happen, but it would be satisfying on so many levels.

Dundalk FC’s UEFA Champions League second qualifying round, second-leg tie against FC BATE Borisov has been chosen for TV coverage.
Broadcaster RTÉ will screen the fixture on RTÉ 2 on Wednesday 22 July. Kick-off at 7.45pm.
