Looks like it'll be more difficult this season for O'Connell as Celtic have just signed Boyata and the guy from Manchester United, plus it sounds like Denayer might go back as well.

Isn't this essentially the same as the Irish abroad thread?

great idea thanks tets pre season always exciting. duffy lenihan an o sullivan all played for blackburn . Those three could have big seasons hopefully

Connolly and mcdonnell played for ipswich again with ipswich s limited budget they could see a bit of game time. Mcdonnell has been given a big talk up by mick

Forgot about McDonnell. Mick was talking up Connolly too and had him in a match day squad or two in the second half of the season just passed. 18 and 19 respectively and both were in the Shelbourne first team.

3 bright prospects at Blackburn. O'Sullivan has more work to establish himself as the other two have done with Lenihan managing to earn a new contract with his end-of-season performances. He also has Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink at Burton more than willing to take him on loan if he doesn't get the requisite game time at Blackburn at the start of the season.

sort of, there's been pre season threads in the past though

Hadn't realised there had been so in the past, must have just took no notice to them. Had just thought it strange to see two threads serving the same purpose. Carry on so!

reece grego-cox scored for QPR yesterday against 'verona all-stars' - they did win 10-0 though so it's fair to say the opposition weren't of the highest standard.

i always find it amusing the austrian / german teams often run up 20+ goal wins in pre-season games. they do things differently over there... no mercy.

Remember when Germany were beating one of the minnows 10 or 11 nil in a competitive game and they won a penalty. Jens Lehmann was going to take it but the opposition players convinced him not to because it was poor sportsmanship and disrespectful of the opposition.

It offers a sense of optimism not quite captured by the Irish Abroad thread, as we see Irish players getting pre-season games and the promise of a break through once the season opens.

.. all hope typically punctured as the thread dies.

Christie, Keogh & Hendrick all started Derby's 3-2 win against Utrecht in the Netherlands. Christie & Hendrick were replaced after an hour and Pearce came on for Keogh with fourteen minutes left. No Irish goalscorers.

Were both the goals Keogh's fault or just one of them?

The second was a penalty given away by Shotton. Keogh left him totally exposed by being substituted a few minutes earlier.

Don't get your knickers in a twist lads.

It was OwlsFan who brought up Keogh's penalty concession on the Paul Corry thread, not me.

Bobby Moseley started at LB for Stoke against Porto today.

Got beat 3-0, but this could be an interesting development if Hughes has plans for Moseley and isn't just having a quick look before sending him out on loan. If he starts showing up in matchday squads once the season proper starts, he could possibly be added to the list of ones to watch in advance of World Cup 2018. Time for the FAI to start thinking about a B international next year? We have quite a few fringe and up-and-coming players who could do with the opportunity to pull on the green shirt in an adult setting.
