At a meeting in Drum today, Salthill Devon proposed a shortlist of ten new names for GUFC for season 2006. They need a reply by Monday. Which would you prefer :

Team Radisson Galway
Galway Athletic
Galway Celtic
Galway Bay Rowdies
Salthill Swans
Galway FC
Liverpool
Salthill Devon
Radisson Rovers
Corrib City Jets

I personally prefer Galway Celtic. A local team playing in green and white hoops would have huge support, particularly in working class areas. I wasn't too keen on the Liverpool selection, as we have no links with the English port.
This, however, is the favourite of the new owners, as they have a link up with Carlsberg which could net the club up to E5,000 over a six-year period, at which time we could change the name again.

Opinions ?

Whats wrong with Galway United, doesn't seem much wrong with it. Also the whole liverpool thing, changing your name for €5,000 over 6 years (not sure if thats per year or total) is a bad idea regardless.

You would want at least another two zeros after that over the same period before it would be even worth considering. Selling your identity for peanuts. I'm sure any number of local sponsors would give "GALWAY UNITED" the same amount (€5000 over six years) to be one of the clubs official sponsors.

if i was a galway united fan and ye absolutely positively had to change it i suppose i would go for galway fc or galway athletic as second choice .. or maybe galway rovers :D then ye could be the second biggest rovers as well as the second biggest club in connacht ;)

They have to be taking the **** with at least half of those choices, no? "Corrib City Jets" ffs? They sound more like a dire Seventies showband than a football team. "Team Radisson"? Hotel contract cleaners. And don't even get me started on "Liverpool" as a choice. That's a whole new thread.

Are the fans being given a decent say in this, or is it (as ever in football) down entirely to the whim of the new owners? Either way, there will be one set of losers. The fans.
